He's just thanking the tree for dropping the goodies from it's branches for him.
In Michigan's upper peninsula, the bears have to work hard to get the wild cherries down by climbing the trees, bending the branches until they break and lay flat against the trunk where they can eat them while hanging onto the side of the tree. The first time I saw a whole row of these wild cherry threes with the broken limbs I said to one of the locals 'you must have had quite a windstorm up here' he laughed and said 'those are the bears breaking the branches so they can get at the cherries'.
Obviously your tree hugger above appreciates a helpful 'feeding' tree.
