Flemish string jig
« on: June 05, 2016, 11:34:00 AM »
Does anyone have plans for a jig that's based on string length?

Thanks

If I don't post it tomorrow, please send me a reminder to [email protected].  Just got back from the Howard Hill earlier today, probably won't be in my shop until tomorrow.

Here ya go:   http://daohead.com/docs/daojig.pdf

Mine turned out pretty good.  Nothing like making your own strings.  You can make them just the way you like.  Best of Luck!

The lengths on the jig I just posted are AMO not actual string length.  So if your bow has a Marked AMO length of 58", you would put the peg in the middle in the 58" hole.  It should create a string length of about 55" depending on where you start making your loops at.  Playing with it and getting it just right for the strings you need is all part of the fun of it for me.  Here is one I did for my Lil' Creep the other day.  It's an 8 strand 450+ padded to 12 in the loops.

Doh! My apologies, I just realized you asked for a jig based on string length.  I don't have one for string length.  You could just subtract 3" from the length numbers on the jig I posted.  It makes strings pretty consistently about 3" shorter than the marked lengths.  Whichever kind of jig you build, your gonna most likely have to play with where you start your loops to get the right length anyway. Good Luck!

There are some plans on the how section. That's what I made mine. But I've been doing a search to see if its amo or string length. I foundsome older threads where someone said it was amo and an even earlier thread saiying was string length. So now I'm stuck not sure which one it is.

I made mine based on string length. Not a lot of info on doing it that way but I drilled the floating peg holes and started at what I thought was close as far as bow length. Made a few like that then marked that hole as the length the strings came out. Then made a few more based off of that one. Mines actually dead on from 36.5"-76.5" strings. However I'm using b55 material and start my loops at 8" instead of 7-7 1/2" like recommended. Also I twist mine up tight. Your layout markings will vary depending on your material, how many strands, how tight you twist and where you start your loops. I made a 10 strand b55 string the other day for a 52" 37lb recurve and used the 46.5" peg hole. The string came out exactly 46.5" but after stringing the bow and shooting it in its just right. If I was using fast flight, another low stretch material, or more strands I'd use the 47.5" hole. Hope this makes sense and helps you all. I still haven't been able to post pics on here or I'd post a pic of my jig.

Here we go.

My board is a 29" 1 x 4.  3/4" from the end I put a 20D nail in to hold my spool while I pull the material off.

2 1/2" down from that same end is where my finishing nails start to stagger the ends. 3/4" off one side, 5/8" from the other (2 1/2" apart) and spaced at 3/8".  I have 10 sets, 11 or 12 wouldn't hurt.

7 1/2" down from that same end is my first measurement hole, for a 70" string.  I have 30 holes, 1/2" apart for 1" string length increments (70" to 41").

26 3/8" down (measured from the same end) are my two end finishing nails, also 3/4" off one side and 5/8" off the other (2 1/2" apart).

Looks something like this.

   ..........                                    .
.               ..............................
   ..........                                    .

You will probably have to tinker a bit and adjust to make it work out just right for you.

Take lots of notes on everything.  What colors you used, how many twists in the loops, where you started the loops, etc..  Just like shooting a bow, string building is about consistency.  Do the same thing every time, then you will know how to adjust.  There are plenty of mistakes to be made--don't waste time making the same ones over and over.

Keep in mind different materials have different characteristics, and you will likely have to adjust.  I suggest sticking with one material until you get things figured out, then you might want to tinker with others.

Also keep in mind that using more or less strands will affect stretch/creep, and the length of the string can also come into play--how much varies with the type material you are using.

If I can help, just holler.  I have a video, but I can give free advice via pm, phone, or e-mail.

Chad

Almost forgot...I have a LOT of extra string and serving material on hand...Dynaflight '97, 8125G, BCY-X, Halo, 62XS, Power Grip, etc.

Occasionally I run across a deal, and pass it on.  I may not have all the colors you want, but what I do have I will sell cheap.  Contact me if interested.
