Is African Blackwood really black?
« on: June 10, 2016, 11:42:00 AM »
Just wondering. I know it's a great wood due to stability and overall structural properties but I've found many sources stating that it sometimes has a purple hue instead of Black.  Any insight is appreciated and pics always welcome!

Thanks,   Pat

I don't think any wood is all the same, from the same tree or from different trees.  It is dark for sure.

It's beautiful when the sun hits it and the grain pops just a bit

The wood I have is dark brown , like dark chocolate . The grain is tight and slightly swirled .

I have used it in knife handles and it ranged from a fairly dark brown with black streaks to nearly black with no figure at all. Usually not the fanciest wood around, but a deep, rich color, hard, dense and very fine-pored. Takes a beautiful finish.
