How do I install seal skin on shelf
« on: June 10, 2016, 10:26:00 PM »
A buddy gave me a few small pieces of seal skin for arrow rests. What do I use for an adhesive or should I use 2 sided tape? Thanks in advance.

Contact cement, the kind that you put some on both surfaces and let it dry and then put the material on the bow and make sure you have it lined up right when you do! You will love the seal skin! Especially the first time you hunt when it's snowing, the snow doesn't stick to it, that and it looks really cool are the only real noticeable difference in it from other materials, guess it is really durable also. Make sure the grain of the hair is pointing forward!

Another alternative is double sided carpet tape, that you can get at Walmart and other places.

I glue mine on with white carpenters glue...we are fortunate here in Canada to be able to buy sealskin and I bought a whole one just to give away to friends and for my own use..then I ended up selling the last half to a friend...if you find the hair longer than you like just shave it down with a pair of hair clippers with a plastic guard on them...guards come in eighth inch increments

I set out a while ago to reduce my herd of 40 bows...And I am finally down to 42

Excellent. I will look for some. Luckily it doesn't snow in Saskatchewan.

I found an online source for seal skins as well as other fur based in BC.
They sell natural and dyed fur. You should see the black dyed!

I had double sided tape on my Bigfoot bow for 2 yrs and shot a lot...both the sideplate and the rest.

I used to swear by BARGE cement, but due to idiot huffers, Barge took out the element that caused brain damage when enhaled, sothat it didn't stick as well...so I went to double sided tape...clean surface and it stayed put for me even in hot, hot weather...

I switched to 3M brand double sided tape for outdoor use. I was using carpet tape but glue gets sticky in our 100 degree heat and rest would slide around. So far since last summer no issues with 3M tape. I got it at the Home Depot.

I use Barge cment with good results.  As an aside, seal skin is quite "fluffy" on its own and I've never seen the need to use the matchstick trick to get proper clearance. there's almost no wear with well tuned arrows. I do have a metal riser ILF that I think is a Morrison Gen II.  It has a lower plunger hole.  The shelf is a slight "pyramid". but not the pronounced radius that I think came with the Gen III.  I found the seal skin wasn't quite enough to get the arrow level with  a Shorty plunger so when I replaced the sealskin I put a doubled short section of flat rubber band under it, similar to what folks do with the match sticks or leather laces.  Works well.

I shave off the hair and just use the skin with stubble. Nice and soft. Barge contact cement.

Glue with any good contac cement. I rub a LITTLE baby oil through fur once a year to maintain water repellent. Best rest ever, can't wear it out!
