Hog Hunting Areas to Try in SE Texas....Any Suggestions??
« on: June 11, 2016, 06:10:00 PM »
Hey all.

I am in the Spring, TX area and am looking for other areas to add to my itinerary for hog hunting.  Right now I have a couple of WMA's that I am planning on hunting but that's all. I don't know anyone here other than family so my choices are limited to the public lands or day leases.

The primary WMA that I am going to hunt is Sam Houston National Forest.  I don't have any specific places in Sam Houston to hunt so I'll have my work cut out for me to find places.
I'd like to look into Big Thickett, but I don't know a thing about it. I never see things written about it with regards to hog hunting. I don't even know if they have hog hunting in Big Thickett.

There are a couple more WMA's that I have seen mentioned regarding good places for bowhunting hogs like Granger. A few groups go to Granger each year on organized hog hunts and have good success.  I think Granger is about a 3 hour drive for me.  I don't mind driving 3 hours to get to a place, but I'd like to know something about it before I set out. You know to at least give me a little bit of a leg up, so to speak.

So, if you have any tips or suggestions on where I could go...or SHOULD go to hunt hogs, please let me know. I'm open to just about any location within reason.
Naturally a lease would be best, but since I don't know anyone and I am not interested in hunting deer, it prolly wouldn't be too smart to join one.  Besides, the couple times I went in a local bow shop to try and find out information on places to hog hunt or places that might have open spots on their leases, it didn't go well. They barely even spoke to me.  I knew I was on my own after that.

Anyway, any help or advice you can give me would really be appreciated.  If you have any info to share on Big Thickett...PLEASE do so.

Thank you for your time and help.

Larry

The Davy Crockett National Forest will have some hogs near the Neches River on the eastern end of Houston County. The problem will be finding them...with the river up and the creeks out they're in there thick I'm sure, but it's a BIG area. The Alabama Creek WMA in Trinity County on the Neches would be worth checking out too. Leases used to be easy to find in east Texas, but lately they've been harder and harder to come by and the prices are about as high as hill country leases these days. If you decide not to go public I'd recommend trying to find package or day hunts that specialize in hogs.

You might also try the San Jacinto River area up around Stubblefield Lake in the SHNF. Lots of low wet country up there.

I'll get on Google Earth and check out these locations.
Doesn't look like any more info is gonna come. That's ok, plenty of possibilities in these 2 responses.  Maybe I'll get lucky.

Thanks guys

There's also quite a few folks that hunt in the Old Sabine Bottom WMA. I don't know much about it personally, but it's not too terribly far from you. Also the Dam B WMA should be good right now, it's outside of Jasper. If you have a boat it would help a lot for that area, even a canoe or kayak. Basically with the temps climbing, find water and there will be hogs. Just a matter of locating fresh sign and getting on them. Good luck!!
