need help with carbons for heavy bows
« on: October 23, 2007, 04:36:00 PM »
I have a morrison longbow that is 83# @ 29.5" and a jeffery recurve 86# @ 29.5.  I am currently shooting 30.5" 2317 XX75s with a 145 gr snuffer on a 100 gr adapter total weight is 722 gr.

I can't find 2317s local at all anymore and would like to give carbons a try.  What would yall suggest?  GT 75/95 are spined about the same but they weigh ALOT less. HELP!!!!

thanks

Josh

I shoot Beman MFX Black Max 300 with 100 gr. insert and 200 gr. point at 29.5" long they weigh right at 700 grs.The GT 75/95 will weigh alot less you will need to add some weight.3 Rivers has weight tubes that are 8 gpi to hlep get the weight up.Easton's new Gamegetter 300's are 2317 or you might need to try Grizzly sticks in the Alaskan or Safari they will get you up in the heavier weights. They are on the Akaska Bowhunting Supply site.

Carbon tech Rhino Safari should be stiff enough and pretty easy to get arrows up in the 700-800gr out of your bow. Tough suckers too.

Carbon Express 350 is a little stiffer than the GT 7595 and the 350 weighs 12 gr/inch

I could be wrong,  But I swear when I checked the carbon express heritage 350 was a .320 deflection and the 75/95 was about .300.  how many gr/inch is a 75/95?

and even at 12 gpi with a 30-31" arrow i'm still going to need about 350gr up front to make it to 720.  I know carbon react different than aluminum to point weight, but will either one be stiff enough to handel that much up front?

I'll give the carbon techs and trad heavies a look to.

also if anybody has any unwanted 2317s at least 30.5" that you want to get rid of shoot me a PM

thanks fellas

Josh

Have you tried Grizzly Safari's Josh? I believe that Alaskan has a test kit now.

GT7595 spine a little stiffer for me than my CE350's, similar to what you're seeing in the deflection difference you've noted Josh.  I'm shooting 80 @ 30 with one of my bows and the GT7595 Traditional cut to 31" with a 100 grain brass insert, 250 grain head (125 grain steel adapter with 125 grain broadhead-total weight 725 grains) flies very well for me.

you can also by weights that screw into the end of the insert.(Go to the Gold Tip web page to read up on them) I am shooting 3555's out of a 65lb long bow total weight of 565 grains. The 5575's should work well and are pretty easy to come by. I have had good luck with the GT's.
