New Bow Came!!
« on: August 01, 2016, 02:16:00 PM »
This is the bow I ordered last week. I got it from a place called Traditional Archery Sales in Florida. The owner's name is Len Busbee (hopefully I spelled that right). He seemed really nice and everything went smooth with the transaction. He sent it to me with what looks like a brand new Dacron string and new rest and plate.

It's a Shakespeare Ocala Special, 62'' and 45@28. From what I've been able to find, it looks like it was made around 1971. I believe this particular model came with a factory sight, which has been removed from this bow. The holes where it was mounted have been filled in.

Overall this is an unbelievably nice bow to be as old as it is, and looks to be in great condition. I got the brace height set right at 8'' and flung some arrows. It shot really well, but a little loud so I tied some cat whiskers on and it quieted the bow a lot. It's very comfortable in my hand and I'm already shooting it well. I'll order another string just to have a backup, but other than that I wouldn't hesitate to hunt with this bow today!!

Nice bow!

Ive got a cheaper model, the Yukon. It may be a cheapy, but it is a tack driver, and feels pretty good for $40! Mine is 40lb @ 28".

Great looking bow.  Possum, looks more like a light colored rosewood, pau ferro, or maybe bubinga to me.  But it can be hard to tell on older bows sometimes.

Good deal Ryan.
The Ocalas and Kaibabs were made with laminated risers ( at least the older ones were). The center sections were zebrawood and usually had some nice rosewood ( I think) on both sides. I have a Kaibab that has a lighter colored wood on the left side of the riser.
I bought a brand new Ocala, and a brand new Kaibab in '67. Then the Ocala was 62" and the Kaibab was 58".
I have 2 of the '67 Kaibabs now.
The ones I got in '67 came with a stick on rest like the Hoyt with a leather backing. Those flat shelves just weren't made for shooting off the shelf. Just last week I put a feather rest on one of my Kaibabs and the arrows fly like bullets now. I suggest that you put one of those feather rests on rather than struggle with trying to get good arrow flight off of the shelf.
They will shoot right along with anything made today.

Thanks for the tip!! I saw some old pics of some Shakespeare bows that had those rests. I may pick one up.
