trying to get quail on the wing, also jackrabbits

My dad and I last weakend went out quail hunting with shotguns. but i am really into shooting my recurve and i made a whole bunch of flu flu last month so i decided i'd rather bring my bow. when we got to the ranch we were hearing ahots from far away and thought were are thoughs guys at because we were walking around for about 2 hours withought action. so we walked around near a water tank an there jackrabits everywhere so i was flighing arrows at them like crazy. i was getting really close on running shots so it really boosted my confidence on quail. then finally we found the perfect area they were everywhere. man i probably shot 6 arrows and a couple of them were really close like off by an inch. my arrows just had field points on them and i think if i had a bigger head i probably could have came home with one. what kind of heads should i use broadheads or zwickey kondors

I would use broadheads on them. I shot one out in Oregon this fall with a woodsman head and he still run with that broadhead in em'. I found him in pretty short order but wouldn't use anything less. dino

Quail, the zwickey condors would work well.
Broadheads for the jack rabbits.
Jack rabbits are tough. Lots of fun though.

i always used .38 cartridges on jacks and a "hoop" style homemade head for birds. it was made out of spring steel wire and delivered a lot of shock and allowed 2-3 inches of penetration from a target point. shot chukar, pheasant, quail, and partridge over good dogs.
the only bird i shoot with a broadhead is geese.

Larry do you have a picture of your homemade hoop style head for bird? I'm curious, does it look anything like a snaro?

ya jack hunting is one of the funnest game ive ever hunted they are hard thought i used cheetah broadheads that i have made shuraded with a file and they work good but they seem to stop halfway in them and the jacks just run off. cj5 i actually just bought some condors and a snaro and the snaro look awsome.

I prefer slightly dull 2 or 3 blade cut on contact broadheads...especially if I'm hunting with dogs.
For rabbits I like Saunder's Bludgeon blunts with judo springs because where I hunt there's alot of rocks and yet the rubber is still hard enough to penetrate a rabbit's thin skin.

I use dull 2-blade broadheads for jacks. I was using judos before, but had a boiler-room hit jack run away with an arrow. Took me two hours to track him and still had to administer the coup de grace---and he broke the arrow! They are tough little creatures.
