Anyone else hunting unit 80 and 81 for elk?
« on: August 13, 2016, 03:10:00 PM »
Anyone else hunting unit 80 and 81 for elk?  My buddies and I are planning a trip for elk opening week. The problem is that my buddies planned to arrive on the 29th mistakenly thinking that was opening day when opening day is actually the 27th. I take off work to arrive the morning of the 26th and I came to the mountains and set up camp, hopefully being ready to hunt bright and early the 27th.
Does anyone else have an opening for me to tagalong for a couple days and then meet up with my buddies just for safety?

You would be welcome with me, but I'm going to be a couple hundred miles from 80 and 81.

I will be rolling in there on the 25th.  We will hike in and set up a spike camp.  You are welcome to as much of that as you wish.

Why not just hunt by yourself until your buddies arrive? Doable and you may pattern a bull.

I agree with Danny.  Go out and acclimate slowly for a couple days.  Get camp set up and be ready when they get there.  They will appreciate it.  And u will be ready to go.

I don't know how much mountain experience you have but here are a few tips if you haven't solo hunted much. I would use the time to scout/hunt. Available water is the one most critical item. If none is available you can pack in and stash a gallon of water where you plan to camp on your way in on these trips. Where are you hunting in 80? I have hunted it a couple times. If I remember it is mostly 10-12,000'.  Do not get overheated as this seems to compound altitude sickness. It has gotten us a couple times and is not what you want by yourself on the mountain. Been there done that and crawled miles back to camp! Not exactly what you were looking for but maybe it will help a little. John

Thanks for the offer Michael! I'll be talking to my buddies...Danny I was strongly considering the solo option and meeting up with my buddies on the mountain
