Question on linemans belt
« on: September 05, 2016, 03:11:00 PM »
I'm using a prussic knot to loosen or tighten the rope attaching me to the tree on my linemans belt. It works but it's awkward when it comes to tightening the rope.
What knots, buckles or systems do others use for this purpose. Or if you use a prussic how do you set it up.
Old doesn't start until you hit three figures...and then it's negotiable

Jack try a rope man it replaces the prussic knot. Best 25.00 i ever spent. Some one will be along with more info i think there's a podcast on it. TD.

Ropeman Ascender #1, Jason did a podcast on that but then he followed up with a YouTube video. I'd suggest searching for the video with "tbwpodcast" and "details of my custom lineman belt"

Personally I'm still using the knot, no tricks to share (I find it a little clunky too)

I like the belt i got with my SOP harness so many years ago. Only need one hand to tighten or loosen it. It's got the twin metal rollers with the gnarly teeth on them. Works the same as 2 D loops on a belt or a motorcycle helmet strap. Handy for dragging deer as well or wrapping up tree sticks for a handy shoulder carry. Here's a picture of my boy using it.

I am using a prussic.  I think the trick is to have a stiff rope that goes around the tree.  Mine is a 11mm kermantle static rope and my prussic rops is 7/8mm prussic rope.  I can adjust mine with one hand pretty easily.

The problem with an ascender is it doesn't get you down.   That is kind of important.

IMO a prussic or similar knot (I use a super cooper) does two things nicely, 1.) it slips a bit on the event of a fall before stopping you.  That aids the shock of the drop.  and 2.) if you foot lock you can nicely descend on the knot.

A ropeman will lock up big time on you.   It is truly designed for ascent only which it does a great job of.

And what Daniel said too!

The ascender and prussic knot work exactly the same way and do the exact same thing. The ascender just does it alot better and allows for easy one hand adjustment in both directions.
Both require you to release mention on the rope to allow it to move exactly the same way.
The ascender is the best system out there so far. With the amount of stands I hang and take down a season if there was a better system I'd be using it. And if a better system ever comes out I will be first in line to get it. Until then the ascender is only thing I will use.

Lt-m-grow, I think you are thinking of a life line not a lineman belt. With a lineman belt you just inch worm your way to the lower step or down the tree. With a lifeline the physics are the exact same with a knot or ascender. You have to release tension on each to get down or to the stick, step, etc that you can reach. You just grab the main line with one hand and release tension on the ascender or knot with other hand and slide down a bit the repeat. Both work the same. But the ascender does it all alot better.

The ropeman ascender looks like a very nice tool, however do the 2 metal pieces make noise? The prussic rope and metal carabiner are quiet and I don't have a problem with it on the ascending line. On linemans belt it can be a little harder to adjust prussic but it is quiet.

Katman,
The carabinier on the ascender is pressed tight by the rope running thru the ascender under the carabinier and pressed by the cam. So there is no noise.

On a life line I use a prussic knot as the main rope is always tight so it's easy to slide up and down with one hand.
On a lineman belt the ascender is a huge improvement.

I use an ascender- a little different style than Jason's (mine is cheaper too!)- but I put a little duct tape where the metal touches = ZERO noise (I am anal about ANY metal noise!)

As Jason has well documented on his podcast vids, it can all easily be done with the slightest movement with one hand (a slight learning curve, but easy enough)

After seeing Jason's podcast on hanging stands a few years ago I picked up the ascender he was using.
Not only is it safer with this method since I can use a much stronger rope it is so much easier to use.
For the past two years now my feet have never left the ground without being safely attached. By far it is the best method I have ever seen.
