I added a third seat to mine for that very reason. It works best with a double-bladed paddle, given the hull width at that point. I use a large water container for ballast in the forward end as needed. I removed the third seat the other day for the upcoming moose hunt.

(For those who don't know, this canoe has virtually symmetrical ends, so paddling it "backwards" works quite well.)

eidsvolling,  That is a great idea.  I assume you ordered the extra seat from Old Town?  I would think with the extra seat mounted you could remove that thwart.  I have considered selling mine and buying a 16' Penobscot as they don't have the extra thwart behind the front seat, but they're not royalex anymore.  I love the Penobscot hull.  Speed and secondary stability are excellent.

Big game will be floated out on a short tow rope as was/is traditionally done with seal, walrus, narwhale, etc.
A good way to keepem cooled down too!

Actually the seat is produced by    Essex Industries  in New York. (They may well be a supplier to Old Town.)

The thwart is substantially stronger as a brace than the seat, and personally I wouldn't remove it.

You're right about the hull. I bought it years ago with this place in mind, where I've seen any number of folks stuck on shore with their knees knocking while the wind blew:

Hey Johnny our LEADER just refinished his Chimera so in an effort not to scratch his lower limb he'll have to stand in the new canoe to shoot
