big jim hot melt

I just got some of big jims hot melt but do dou you guys just cut some pieces off of the big cylinder shaped stick or heat the whole thing?

Just heat the end of the big cylinder. Run your torch flame on the end till the glue starts to melt. DO NOT let it get hot enough to smoke or actually burn.

I got a thin copper rod hot and put it through the glue. Then I just get a little hot. I made a insert tool out of dowel and the proper screw makes it easier to put them in. I don't know if you saw this or not but he also sells the same glue that goes in a glue gun. That's what I'm going to try next.

I forgot to say and I know this doesn't pertain to your question,but it gives you options. When I've done all my timing,and know I will not be taking the inserts out I always use gorilla super glue. It is so much faster.

I make a insert holder by taking section of aluminum arrow 6-8" long. Drive in a field or target point in the al tube. might want to center punch the al tube to snug the point. Threads are all that is exposed. Screw in your insert. Heat the insert. Rub on the glue stick. Insert in arrow. Give a few seconds and unscrew the insert holder. bingo!

My BJ hot melt is more of a cup cake shape.Anyway I don't cut pieces of.I just heat a small portion of the hot melt with either a candle or lighter and dip my insert lightly.You don't need much.

I prefer the hot melt over more permanent glues.As I may want to remove the insert at a later date for a different grain insert or style of insert like swaged vs screw in.Or possible even cut the shaft to make it shorter.Then I still have the insert to be easily removed from the cut off piece. I do like his hot melt and highly recommend it.

Do you guys get the stick or slug?  I can't tell from the description what the difference is.

i got the slug, its the biggest and will last a long time for  a few bucks more, i love it highly recommend it.

I use the slug from big Jim,  no cutting at all. Buy yourself a alcohol burner,  cheap, last a long time & works.

Check out Big Jim's video on Youtube where he has shot arrows into a tree with his personal bow, I think it is like an 80 pounder.  He proceeds to pull out arrows to test this hot melt on his inserts.  Informative and funny!

Use a heat gun instead of a flame. More controllable and though it can smoke the glue it won't produce a flame unless you are trying to. I'm using wood or boo arrows only, so all my points are glued on and I prefer the hot melt. I've buried some points pretty deep and have yet to have one pull off. The thing to do is heat both sides, apply glue to one, insert while twisting, twist a few times once it's bottomed out and then dip the tip in a cup of water to cool and set the glue.

I use the slug and torch set as low as I can get it. Tim Cosgrove taught me how he uses this for inserts on his Easton Axis and I've never looked back in 6 years, never an insert pull out failure, but easy to change out from aluminum to brass if you want to play with combined up front weight.
