Keeping racoons off a feeder
« on: September 15, 2016, 03:13:00 PM »
I have a feeder from Cabelas that has the steps as part of the base.  I can't keep the racoons from emptying the feeder to save my life.  It has two varmit cages that still aren't far enough from the funnel to keep them out.  I've put carpet tack strips all over it and they seem unphased by this.  Any other practical ideas out there?  Is there a simple way to electrify the cage?

We use the ( eliminator plate ) and coons can't get any corn , they are like $40 and worth every penny.

If it is a 55 gallon barrel, you can use 1x1 or 1x2 welded wire and make a cage that goes around the entire barrel. I have several this way, and coons are no issue anymore.

Yep a large diameter cage works but will cut down on the throw distance of the feeder, I really like the eliminator plate but requires a 12 volt system. A well placed 22 cal pellet works well.

"Coons? When raccoons tried to get on our back porch Mama just chased em off with a broom." - Forrest Gump

Couldn't resist. In all seriousness though good luck. We had coons getting into our trash until the neighbors let their dog run loose at night.

Thanks guys.  I have a feeder that has the eliminator plate, I just didn't realize it was sold as a separate unit.  I can always trust that feeder will be running right.  I'll definitely look into getting one.

I saw a tripod where someone put 4' of 4" PVC on each leg. I assume too big and slick for them to climb. Good luck, they are a noble enemy.

That don't work either, or if it does, it is just for a short period of time till they figure out how to climb it anyway!

I trap them. No one hunts them any more. It also will help with the turkey population in your area.

Duke dog proof coon traps, and a .22 LR. Will take a couple weeks, but you will thin em down.

We build a hardware cloth cage around the feeder head, that works great(Irv came up with that one).

We had tries a bunch of different things prior to that. They are pretty bad in south Florida. I shot 11 with my recurve one season!

With the worldwide wild fur market as low as it's ever been, raccoon numbers will continue to climb until either you and I manage them or Mother Nature manages their number with a disease outbreak.

Trapping and removal benefits the raccoon population and the populations of ground nesting birds they impact.

Dog-proof traps are the best tool out there. In addition to Duke DPs, there are some excellent American made dog proof traps on the market. .22 short HP are sufficient.

They cant get into my feeder but I have a healthy population of them getting into my feed.

I love to trap so just waiting for season and a little colder weather and I will square them away! I will be able to gang set 6 or 7 traps and probably fill them every night for a couple nights there are so many of them.

I have or had a serious coon problem.  They kill my chickens and knock over my corn and eat it.  I set my 3 dog proof coon traps and 3 weeks later I had trapped 19.  These traps work great.
