Woods of choice.

Thinking about getting another bow.Looking to hear your choice of riser woods and especially limb wood choices. Why that wood and its performance characteristics. Thanks

I personally like walnut limb cores. Don't know how to describe how they feel, except to say very smooth. As to the rest, just personal preferences.

The fancy riser woods and veneers look awesome, but one of the best looking bows I've seen was a simple cocobolo riser with red elm limbs under clear glass.  Nothing fancy at all, but it was beautiful.  Plus, red elm is supposed be a great performing limb.  I also like walnut like mentioned above.  I have an RD longbow with walnut outer lams and bamboo core.  Riser is Jatoba.  The red riser and the dark brown look great together.

 

My goto bow has a ziricote riser and black walnut veneers on the limbs. I love the combination. I also have bamboo cores in the limbs.

Pick a bowyer first and then ask them what they recommmend...many bowyers have preferences in what they work with...and they know what they have or can get

My favorite bow is a Bacote riser and Pacific Yew limbs. If I was to order another bow I would stick with the Yew limbs and have an Osage riser, if possible!

Two tone riser glued as a flare not parallel. Burl for limbs and my second choice is Burl. Dont see a lot of Mango but it would be a nice choice if you couldn't find.....you guessed it Burl.

Any good hardwood works well for risers. I prefer Osage, Bacote, Bolivian Rosewood, Bubinga.

For limbs, I like light but strong and elastic woods like red elm, and black walnut. Many people overlook the excellent properties black walnut gives, including its ability to resist twists and warp. Study black walnut for limbs and search the net.
 Hardwood limbs tend to be a little more shocky, and slightly slower.

Here's what and why!!

My favorite bow, not because of the looks, but because of the story behind it.  My father cut the wood in the bow, walnut limbs and birdseye maple riser, in the late 40's, when he was a gunsmith.  The wood was cut into gunstock blanks and was my bed until I was about 10 years old (we lived in a very small travel trailer).  I talked to Chuck at Two Tracks and he agreed to make one of his Echo ASL longbows from the wood.  Intentionally a very plain bow, he did a superb job making "Dad's Bow".  It's an excellent shooter, too.

Limb core I leave to bowyer as he knows what works best with his design. Favorite riser, figured Bocote.

Risers.......cocobolo and Osage, Limb, Tamo Ash, Yew and grainy Cherry......all good choices.

I really like walnut limbs.

Little known fact, some ipe is figured, and nearly black. If you stumble on some the look can be stunning. But it's not something a bowyer is going to have around I imagine. Black ipe also runs well over 1.0SG so it would be a super dense heavy strong riser
