Kansas hunt

Does anyone know anything about the Fall river wildlife area in Kansas?Is it a bowhunting only area?Has anyone ever hunted it?

Hunted once when I lived in Wichita. That was only for coyotes with a rifle. I don't believe it is bowhunting only because I remember hearing other guys talk about deer hunting it with rifle.

I remember seeing a big flock of turkeys and some does.  No coyotes tht day.  I believe it has like 12000acres to roam on. I would call the DNR to get more specific.  Nice looking area too.

If you were planing on hunting public land, I would go noth central-Glenn Elder wma Really big bucks roam that area especially if you stick to the river and creek bottoms(thick cover)

or go further west and hunt Cedar bluff or I think its called Webster Resevoir Wma.  A guy at work hunted at Webster and shot a 150 class with his wheels and with a Buck decoy.  Had a chance at a bigger buck but muffed the shot.  He also saw a father and son out there that killed two big bucks that canped near him.

Out west and the north central is less populated and the public land doesn't get alot of pressure.  IMO I would opt for out west if I were going to drop 400+ for a tag.

Fall River is a fine place to hunt, its not archery only though. I've spent the last several years hunting that area, at least until last year. It has become a very popular place for non-residents and the last season we hunted there it was a constant battle to stay out of everyones way. It got so bad that we actually had someone sabotaging our tree stands. (Loosening ratchet straps, cutting the ropes we used to hoist our bows etc.)

So between the massive influx of hunters and the falling population of large bucks (we've taken nothing but doe's the last three years) we chose not to hunt that area this last season. Instead we leased a small section of ground closer to home. It just wasn't the same though, we usually spend 10-14 days camping and hunting in the Fall River area each year during November. This year left us with the feeling we we're missing something and I think we're gonna go back to the campsite next year. It's kind of been a tradition for us. As a matter of fact right after the season ended we scouted some areas that are a little more remote.

But by all means come on down and hunt,enjoy yourself.Just do me a favor, if you don't see the deer you're looking for, please take a look around, soak up the beautiful scenery then look up and "SHOOT SOME OF THOSE DAMNED SQUIRRELS" they're everywhere. Noisy little buggers too.

Crittergitter outlined the WMAs in southeast KS pretty well. The highest hunting pressure these areas see is from non-resident bowhunters. This is especially true during the timeline of Veteran's Day through the end of the month. There has been a decrease in age structure of buck on these areas over the last 10 years, there still are quality animals but there is not one behind every tree.

Now with that said I do not feel that the pressure in KS come close to what you are used to in PA. Deer quality is also better.

Do your homework and come with realistic expectations and you will have a great hunt.
