String silencer from raw wool?
«

I know there are tons of tutorials on how to make string silencers from wool yarn. I don't have any wool yarn. I do have neighbors with sheep and an old sheepskin rug. How do I make a silencer out of just the "wool hair". Thanks.
Ps. are hush puppies yarn or raw wool hairs. I haven't found a picture of them just out of the box.

Don't see why you couldn't just tie a bunch of the wool in the middle . Then tie it on your string .
Never thought about that but sounds like a good idea .
You won't have to fluff them up , they would be ready to go .
Let us know how it works .
And pictures .

I've often used raw wool right off the sheep. Just tie it in a bunch, insert between string strands and twist up tight. Pluck or shoot a few shots and trim into a neat ball. Very greasy and water repellent.

Go for it. You might have to experiment a bit but it's sure worth a try.

Do a couple cold water rinses to get dust and other "foreign" matter out. Grab some tufts about a thumb thickness from the tag (outer) end - usually a bit lighter in color. Hold each firmly between thumb and finger and flick/brush lightly with a pet brush. Take 3 or so of these bundles and some thin dia serving or something similar. Take the 1st and tie a couple overhand knot around the center and pull tight. Add another bundle and do the same - then the 3rd. Insert thru your string bundles and line the string up with the center of the bundles. With flemish you can use the ends of the serving to tie in place or just cut - either way they can be slid up and down. I tie the endless all in. Trim to a round disk shape and shoot a dozen arrows. Then to can trim to a nice ball that will hold it's shape.

You see sheep running around with bald patches you'll know who to blame. :-)

It works. Like others have said just grab a bunch tie it together and put it in between your string strands. Stay out of burrs and briars ( I get a lot goat hunting) They become a permanent part of your silencer.

I got some fleece from a local farmer and I think its pound for pound quieter than anything. I been using rubber string silencers mostly but Im sporting the wool now.
I just put it on the string. No need to place it in string grooves.
Also, It didn't change the tune of the bow. Very light.
