Ladder Stand Hoist
« on: October 21, 2016, 09:12:00 PM »
The recent (sort of on-going) tree stand safety threads have caused me to plan some additions to my stand plans.

I just ordered a Muddy Tree Stand Hoist. Studied youtube videos a lot to see how to get ladder stands up without killing oneself. I've put up some in the past and "walking" them up, for two people (especially with me being 6" shorter than my son) is a chore and an injury waiting to happen.

I was going to just buy a block and tackle from Tractor Supply but then I saw this device. Looks promising.  Going to use it next week to hoist two new, 100#, 18" buddy stands.

In the past I've found ladder stands to be difficult to manage a recurve bow from. The hand rails like to kiss my recurve limbs a bit too hard. Reckon I just need to master moving in them.

I'm not giving up on my hang-ons; Lone Wolf and Muddy but more ladders in my future (also better for the grandsons).

I use a hoist. Best darn thing I have bought in a long long time. Agree wit you on the railings though. I try when ever possible to leave them off of the stand . Some designs a re better than others and if you are not going to use the shooting rail, then it make no difference to the security of the stand to leave them in the box.

Here's the link to Dick's site where I bought the device. Looking to try it out next week when it arrives.

Actually the rail I'm referring to are the side rails on either side of the seat.  I usually don't even put the shooting rail on these kinds of stands (this one will raise up out of the way though).

Maybe, because this is a large (buddy) platform I can maneuver to keep the bow away from those side rails.

The ladders we bought are the Hawk Big Denali.  Looks like side rails are small and angled to provide maximum clearance for the lower bow limbs?

It really hurt to buy these things at full price. I generally buy such things after the season has ended to get discounts. I feared these would be gone if I waited and certainly, by definition, hunting season would have been over.

I gotta be totally honest but I can't see how putting up a hang on stand with rapid rails and a  linesman harness  isn't easier and safer than a ladder stand any day of the week. Much more mobile and user friendly. JMHO.

So I'm curious. How do you get the hoist up to start with?

dnono, it looks like, from what I have seen on the net, that you fasten the pulley to the tree about head high or so and then run the pull up rope through it and tie the rope to the top step of the ladder.  As you lift on the stand you pull on the rope to help with the weight at the top.  Maybe wrong but that's what it looks like to me.

David,
Yep, that's how it works. It is a strap rather than a rope though.  You can find videos on youtube to see how it works.  Pretty slick.

I've been in the garage, missing a football game, for the past 2.5 hours putting that stand together though!  Not done yet.

LC. I don't think you are far off. I have rapid rails and sticks with hang on stands. Certainly far more mobile!  And the hang ons are suited to a lot more trees.  The ladder has to get around limbs for a much longer length of the tree bole.   Maybe the ladder itself is more stable and less likely to slip or move.

bought a rig that is kinda like the winch on a boat trailer last year that works great. hook it to the tree head high and take the strap and hook it to the bottom of the seat part of the stand and just winch it up. it helps a lot if you have the pegs that go in the ground for the legs to hook into keeps them from swinging out while you winch it up. Only thing is it is kinda noisy when you are cranking the winch.

That's this thing. Boat winch.  Of course I'll be setting it up well before it is hunted.

I need something like that. So far, I have done it the hard way by lifting it a little at a time as I inch it up the tree trunk. I've never gotten hurt, but they have slipped many times. I like ladder stands, but I often have to get my son to help me. I never use one with a hand rail. Actually, I don't like rails or arm rests either one, which makes a safety harness even more necessary. But, a properly anchored ladder stand is very solid and safe if you use good sense. This hoist sounds very useful.

I much prefer a ladder stand to a hang or climber but the platforms on the single stands are generally on the small side.  I'm thinking of ordering a couple of these to add to my treestands.
