I'm a little confused?
« on: November 16, 2016, 11:05:00 AM »
I recently traded a recurve for a kanati r/d longbow. It's specs are 60" 50#@28.
I also have a 58" 50#@28 striker r/d longbow.
The kanati has a skinny string on it. I tried shooting the same arrows out of the kanati that I shoot from the striker. They seem weak but when shot through the chrono (we have a bunch of them here at work) I was getting the identical speed from both.
My question is, what differences should I expect from a skinny string compared to the bowyers original string? My striker has an 18 strand fast flight string on it.
I am most impressed with the kanati. It is super quiet and I shot it like I owned it for years as soon as I received it. Other than needing to get it tuned up, I love it.

I would think the skinny string would be 3-5 FPS second faster, but if you ran it thru the crony, I guess that blows that theory. But the other bow has a FF string so maybe there would be very little change.

How deep shelf is cut makes a huge difference too.
Stay sharp, Kenny.

Both bows have low stretch strings on them. Unless you chrono the bows with the same material string on each bow, you can't know whether it's the string or bow that is causing the apparent discrepancy, or lack of one.

You will most likely find the flight difference is the riser/shelf ... I have owned both

The skinny string will make a "slight" speed difference, faster .... I do find skinny strings quieter also

When you change the string it will change the "s curve" at release, which can affect arrow spine some.  Other than that, the main difference I've seen in low strand count strings vs. moderate strand counts is more stretch, more creep, less durability.  Been tinkering with them on and off for the last 20 or so years with different materials.

I agree wholeheartedly about the Kanati, just an excellent bow. Big fan of the Striker also, you've got two winners there. The only real difference I could see would be the depth of shelf cut.

May be interesting to retest the Kanati once the arrow has been tuned.

Just my 2 cents....pick the string that is quietest....I never even consider FPS

every bow that I put a skinny string on needed the next arrow size up with almost the identical point weight as before.

a couple bows I took the skinny off because I couldn't sacrifice so many arrows that was already matched for that bow.

in my experience skinny strings are like wire and that shaft better be stiff

Not sure on the kanati but I believe most strikers are cut past center that may make a difference. I've found ff may seem a little faster but is louder than a good b55 Flemish
I'd rather be judged by 12 then carried by 6
