I always smiled when my grandpa would say that. In his day everyone wore red Woolrich hunting coats.
He always referred to his orange vest and hat as "putting his red on".

Ours will hit the woods Monday. After the first week the deer will settle down a little and I'll be hunting the thickets and escape routes. The one good thing the red army does is move the deer around some.
Good luck!

I grew up hunting deer that the guys down the mountain kicked up. Now I hunt a 20000 acre gameland all alone.

Nantahala Nut its funny you mentioned that because this morning before I logged on I said to myself I should try to make friends with some of fine people in the great state of North Carolina,I won't even be offended if anyone laughs at and makes fun of my Boston accent..

I still say red also. I have some younger friends that correct me and tell me it's orange. I know it's orange but old habits are hard to break. As a kid, I would wear a coat of my dad's that had a red liner and I would wear it inside out. Brought back memories.

The red guys don't bother me. I have never seen a really great deal of change in deer behavior when the boom-boom starts. The properties around me all hunt with guns, and I still feel only pressured to "pick a spot".

Tajue17 I've got a lot of ground to myself but alas there aren't a lot of deer in the southwest mountains. Now the northwest corner is a different story.
I won't make fun of your accent...I'm from Pennsylvania Dutch country originally so I talk funny sometimes!

Our army invades Monday in Pa. Monday after thanksgiving has been opening day of riflefor as long as anyone I know can remember. Its basically a holiday here, all the schools are closed.
As for the red army anyone ever heard the woolrich black and red plaid referred to as "the Pennsylvania tuxedo"? I've heard old timers call it that and it must have been a pretty common name, Dogfish head brewery recently released a beer brewed with Pa spruce tips called "the Pa tuxedo "

I've been a part of the "red" army since 1967. Huge tradition here in WI.

Haha, I thought this was going to be about bolsheviks, I've never heard that phrase before.
I have seen some of those red/black plaid hunting pants on an auction site. Think they will be making a comeback?

My dad and I still use the old red and black checkered wool suits. They may be a bit old school, but they sure are warm!
