Pop?
« on: November 22, 2016, 10:46:00 AM »
I was downstairs shooting a trade bow I received about 4 years ago and heard a pop, looked it over real good and didn't see anything, now I'm afraid to shoot it. Any idea?

Check your string? I've had a similar experience, couldn't find anything wrong with the bow, then realized that 5 or 6 strands of my bowstring had broken.

Or, one year I was shooting POC shafts in the back yard. I heard an odd sound when shooting. The next shot the arrow shattered at the release. There were splinters all over the place.

My bowhand had a long scratch on it, but that was it. I was very fortunate.

I think I will put it a vice and pull it with a rope and see what happens.

Good plan...and do it more than once.  I am betting something is very wrong with the bow.

One thing to try is see if you can draw it just a bit and leave it with some tension on it (tie the string off?) and then inspect it.   I bet you find a lifted lam that you could not see about inspection..

DON'T put it under too much pressure though as it will be too dangerous IMO to inspect it up close.

Rub a cotton ball all over the bow. If there is a splinter or crack it should catch some of the cotton ball.

Is it one piece or a take down?  Maybe something with the take down system?  I don't know.  But be careful!

Thanks Pat, that is a good start. It is a glass one piece.

Maybe the string wasn't fully seated in the groove and when you pulled back, the string slipped into place.

Find a wall or piece of Plexiglas to stand behind.  I had the same a pop, when I went to pull it again the bow blewup, limbs stuck in the wall and fiberglass was embedded everywhere.

Be careful.

I think the fist pop was the glass letting go and the Boom.

Check carefully, I had one make a pop and the next draw it was in pieces at my feet...I should've known better than to draw it again without checking it over

I have had a similar noise that was caused by the string not seated. Makes you nervous for sure.

I had one pop at the shot and could not find anything wrong with the bow. Went to shoot it again and the string under the serving felt funny. A closer look showed several strands were broke under the serving.
