1 Week in a Pack
« on: October 29, 2007, 06:57:00 AM »
I know, I know, it's probably been answered before and I like the 1 BH Ferret method.....
With bow and quiver in hand.
If you could only take one day pack and one 'extras' pack that had your food, clothes, H2O,sleeping bag,shelter...what packs/gear would you use?
 Call it a mid-November,Ohio Valley,public land hunt.

I use the medium size military ruck sack.  In the 3 outside pockets I carry: a roll of toilet paper (for the obvious use and to lay down markers if needed); 3 large garbage bags (to put my quartered deer in inside of the large compartment of the ruck sack to be hiked out and these garbage bags also can be opened and used as an emergency shelter if needed); disposable rubber gloves, swiss army knife, spare flashlight and spare batteries, basic first aid stuff, small leatherman tool, folding bone/wood saw, spare bow string, spare compass, matches, 50' of parachut cord, a small file and two battery operated night sticks.
It's not what you kill but how you hunt...

Don't think you can quarter them out here in Ohio. Just FYI

You going to the SE Ohio Trad camp Billy?

Wish I had time/cash to go Jason.
On the road for 21 or so days starting today.
Question comes from the hunt here in Indiana, that I did go to.
Thinking of going for a week next year. Trying to minimize for a tent stay.
And we can't 1/4 deer in Indiana either, gotta show up whole at check in

No tent. Bivy sack, down jacket with a half bag for my legs (known as an elephants foot in alpine climbing)and a sleeping pad. I've spent nights out in the teens and 20's with that and is more versatile than a sleeping bag. Water filter clothes and hunting kit all fit in a good sized day pack. I like Granite Gear's light weight packs.

hydration bladder, 2 buttons--1 green 1 black, spare string, superglue, GPS, compass, map, spare socks, spare gloves, magnesium fire block w/flint, pillbox full of tinder, needle and thread(not only for fixing things, but makes a good emergency suture--the superglue will also work nicely for minor cuts), and a couple of sandwiches.
I also have one of those little mini entrenching tools for various chores.

This is a good reminder thread! It seems like everyone carries something different, and we can certainly learn from each other.
