I too have an Eveready its not a bad light .I have 4 headlamps total and a hand held Fenix that goes through batteries like crazy . I have a red colored light that I think is a Princeton and its the best I have.  My wife bought a Cyclops for her purse Scheels sports had them on sale for $15.00 for 2 a really good price and a good light.

I have a Streamlight "Double Clutch" very light weight rechargeable also runs on AAA's. Easy operation turn the bezel clockwise for flood or counter for spot first turn is high second is low on both settings. Max lumens only 125 but a simple rugged light. Also a great company will never charge for repair or replacement. Good people to deal with as I sell a lot of there products.

There are more options out there now than every before - LEDs are a game changer.  My one suggestion is get a USB rechargeable model.  With batteries, I used to always carry spares and often took out partially used batteries, not wanting to start a trip/outing with partially spent ones.  PITA.  With rechargables, I'm *always* starting out fresh and I've even done long trips carring a small folding solar panel to top-up the headlamp or other devices.  In the ideal world, a light where the recargable battery is removable - for that odd time when you ran out of juice and *have* to do something - would allow you to stick in a couple of AA or AAA's.

I have a Petzl that takes regular or halogen bulbs and runs on AA batteries.  It is twenty years old and still works.  I also have an Energizer brand LED headlamp that is a few years old but has seen enormous abuse on the job site and is still going strong, it runs on AAA batteries.

Many great suggestions, but one that hasn't been mentioned is the petzl zipka.  It is a very specialized and has a retractable strap.  I love them because they are so easy to carry.  Not as bright as many of the ones mentioned, but like all tools, they have a place in my tool box.

I always carry two when in the back country because changing batteries in the dark is not a very good option.  Try it some time if you don't believe me.

You might check out Thrunite headlamps. Extremely durable and simple!
