John Schulz told me that Howard Hill was "death" on anything that added weight to the tips of the bow. Personally I doubt that wedges add enough weight to the tips to affect performance.

Howard liked slim and fairly delicate limb tips and I've read at least a couple of accounts where he broke off a tip.
He just cut new nock grooves with his broadhead file and went about his business.

The one thing that a tip overlay can do, if it done well, would be with B50 strings, It could spread the stress on the string out around a continually curving ramp and provide a longer string life.   On my own I cheat a little, I cam the string slots and slightly round the back to avoid a total flat spot.  Perhaps Craig does this as well.

Here's something to think about re tip overlays, not wedges.  They add a few grains to the limb tip, but also have the effect of moving the limb tip 1/8-inch or so farther forward (i.e. increase the setback), adding that much more early load to the limbs.  IMO, it's a wash.  I like em because they look nice.

Long story short, the limb tip wedges are sufficient to enable a Hill bow to handle a fast flite string with ease.  Limb tip overlays aren't necessary, but they look nice and don't detract from the bow's performance.  It's a personal preference thing.  Go with what you like to look at knowing either will work just fine.

LOL....so true; I definitely tend to overthink things, David!

So many great points raised by everyone.  Many thanks for the advice and photos!

    :notworthy:

So I've decided to keep my order as is, without overlays.  And if, Lord willing I both learn to shoot my bow well and have the funds to get another Hill, I shall order that one with the overlays.

Learner, I had a buddy tell me one time that the best part of buying a new truck was "having the want tos". Yeah, it can be fun and confusing with so many choices.   :)  I can almost guarantee that tis will not be your last Hill.  They are addictive.

The harsh reality is that real archery existed long before computers.  At the Sioux Falls shoots years ago, one of the hardest things to find was a place to park your car and they had a large parking area.
