Snakeskins...whatchathink
« on: October 29, 2007, 08:00:00 PM »
I wanted opinions on snakeskins good and bad.  I'm ordering a Turkey Creek with Osage riser and brown glass.  Thinking about having Doug put copperhead skins on.  Whatchathink.

I love they way they look and think they work pretty good camo wise.

I think the skins would look great. I just ordered a bow from Doug myself. I started with cocobolo and spalted maple. But I changed my mind today. Going with Zebra wood for the riser and lams. With a black leather grip black tips and a black phenolic stripe in the riser. I cant wait until it gets here.

I have a 45@28 walnut riser black glass 64 inch bow.  Fell in love with it and had to have another with a little more poundage.  You won't be disapointed.  Sweet shooters, fast and Doug is first rate as well.  Can't wait to see pics.

Copperheads are excellent. If you put the money into those, black glass is perfect, no sense sinking money into veneers you're going to cover anyways.

I wouldn't put copperheads over black glass..the pattern would not show good.  The copperheads have a thin skin and whatever is under it will show through.  Honey or light brown would show better.

I'm going with brown glass.  Just wandering about how they hold up, etc.  I thought maybe I would just do the limbskins if I don't get the real ones.  Anybody had experience with them.

I know we have some sponsors here that sell the limb skins and I have bought some to check them out. For my money they aren't even close to the real thing. Get the bow with brown glass and see if it's one you are going to keep before you put the skins on it. You can always send it to one of the professional skinners on here later.

I like snake skins, especially copperheads, on some bows.  Not a big fan of limb skins, they just don't compare IMO.  You asked for opinions so here is mine.  I would consider one of Doug's clear glass bows over a limb veneer.  If you have'nt seen the Aniegre, it is absolutely stunning IMO.  The pics I have seen of the snakewood veneers are awesome too.  My TC is clear glass over Persimmon and I really like it.  As stated above, I would get the bow and shoot it awhile before I put skins on it.  My preference (even if you go with brown or black glass) would be to not have snakeskins.  Dougs bows all look great IMO.

Skinning a bow is great. Nothing looks as cool as real skins.<><

I'm gonna disagree with copperheads over black or even brown glass.  Here's why....

Copperheads are a flat out beautiful skin.  Lots of gold, orange and copper colors in the skins.  Putting copperheads over black or brown glass will mute the colors to the point of making the intricate pattern of the snake much less visible.  Yeah, you'll still see it, but man....what a waste to not see all the vibrant colors in that skin.  Copperheads are best over osage.  The golden color of the wood really brings out the best in a copperhead skin.

Other light colored woods may work, but if you wanna see what a copperhead skin can look like, ya gots ta go with osage.

I was gonna go with osage riser and limb veneers.  Didn't know it would make much difference.  Like the look of the copperhead and it makes a great camo.  They sure blend in well where I hunt.  Thanks for the opinions, keep it coming.
