Stalker Wolverine FXT Help!
« on: February 11, 2017, 09:57:00 AM »
Gang,

Good morning! Looking for some help with my Stalker Wolverine FXT. I am having a hell of a time getting any arrow consistency with it and I think it may be my setup. Here are my specs:

- RH 60" 50#@28", drawing at 28" (poundage measured with an Easton digital draw scale)
- BH at 7 3/8" (recommended range is 7 1/4 to 7 3/4)
- Brass nocking point at 1/2" above 90*
- Shot off the shelf, split finger with a Black Widow calf hair tab
- Easton Axis 400 shaft, 29 3/4" from nock to BOP, 75gn brass HIT insert, 12gn GT Ballistic Collar, and a 200gn FP, total arrow weight is 578

Here is what I see. In my ten yard basement range I am hitting about 4-8" right with either bareshafts or fletched arrows fairly consistently, outside at 15-20 yds its anyone's guess where that arrow is going to hit (high, low, left, right). Its bad enough that I cannot begin to diagnose what might be wrong. Before we scream form...I can pick up my Dale Dye of similar specs and hit a dessert plate at 20yds with BH, FP, blunts with solid consistency. My form is not perfect by any means, but it has worked well for me so far.

Just for grins this morning, I dug out an Axis 500 bareshaft with 75gn brass HIT insert and 200gn field point and cant miss the spot at about 7-10 yards inside (haven't gotten it outside yet). I didn't think the 400 shaft with all that weight up front would be over spined, and I thought the 500 with the same weight would be too weak.

Any help or suggestions before I scrap this setup and start all over again. I've never had any luck with the Easton spine charts which tell me I should be shooting a 340 out of any bow I shoot, and the 3Rivers calculator has been a bust for me too.

I know South builds a fantastic bow, and it is a shooter for sure! It just seems a little more sensitive that others I have tuned. I am confident it is certainly not the bow!

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I think you answered your own question. Go with the 500 shafts and don't overthink it

I had a similar experience with another bow. A lot has to do with design and how far the riser is center cut

That's what I was thinking, but I also overthink tying my shoes sometimes! I just wanted a sanity check before I go drop coin on more shafts. If the long haired general sees another arrow-looking box at the front door it'll be hell to pay for me!

I'd also call South at some point just to run it by him. That's what I did when I had confusing tuning problems with another bow/arrow combo. He should know what's best for his design

Some bows are easier to match up than others. My Schafer can shoot just about any spine arrow well. A few of my other bows took a lot more tinkering but once you find the right combo you're in the game

Are you shooting a double arrow nock? The arrows might be dropping down on the string when you are releasing the arrow. If you are shooting 3 under, I highly recommend shooting two nocks. Good luck!

Definitely stiff. I shoot full length 400's at 51 pound with 175 upfront. Mine is 64" and I draw it 31".

Big Ed,

You think stiff huh. I have another set of limbs that pull 56lbs, think the 400 set up would be aby better for those? Thanks!

Your shooting right handed and your arrows are hitting right, that's weak not stiff or am I reading your post wrong.

I shoot axis 500s I have a 26" draw length and my bow draws 48#-@26"I cut my arrows to 27-5/8" I use the 75 grn brass inserts with 200 grn heads. With this set up my arrows fly fantastic!!! I did bare shaft the 500s cutting them down a little at a time to find the sweet length. It works for me. I wonder if 29-5/8" would work for you? Hope this helped. Best of luck

Well you are getting a lot of answers so I hesitate to add any other guesses but here goes.  Here are some thoughts.

I shoot 48, 50, 53, 54, lb bows.  I can't believe they are that weak.  Also, 75 grin hit inserts are not the same as adding more weight to the end of the arrow.  At least for me.

A  few years ago, I was shooting wood arrows out of a 53 lb bow.  They kept shooting to the right. I ended up with 78# spined arrows before they shot ok. Actually hunted with them one year for elk.  After shooting a lot the next year, they started showing stiff.  I was getting a false reading. And, I worked on my form.

Two years ago, I shot a nice bear with that same bow.  Once I realized  what was happening,  I was  down to shooting 62/63 spined wood. Just my experience.

Good luck, I hope you get it figured out.

I assume that you're left handed because .400s impacting right for a right hand shooter would be weak.  If that were the case, the .500s would be weaker yet, which they're not.

So, long story short, the arrows are telling you what to do.  Go with it (the .500s).

I shoot an identical set up as you, on all my 50# bows.  Take your 500 spine arrow and simply shoot a 145 grain field point( no brass insert). If you are still shooting slightly right, build out your side plate with a verticle toothpick underneath your side plate material. You may also raise your nock point maybe 1/16" to 1/8". It may look too high when you view with an arrow nocked, but believe me, it will shoot.  I think you will find your arrows will shoot true.  Black Widow has a great tutorial on fine tuning for true arrow flight. OK, then.  If your bow shelf is cut a lot past center, your arrow when nocked and on the bow, may be bisected by the string or it may actually point inside the string toward the right.  In either case, you will need to build out the side plate to get better arrow flight.

With all that weight up front, the.400s should work. Of course, it's also possible that you're getting a false weak reading as MnFn suggests.  If you really pluck, or have a really low brace height, the tail end of your shaft could be bouncing off side plate.  You would hear that though.

Most likely, will just need to build out the side plate.   Good luck.

Mine shoots a variety of spine arrows. I have found that if you shoot too weak of a shaft it can act stiff and give you a false reading.

I shoot a 50# wolverine with 350s cut to 32" with 150 grains up front.

Guys, thanks for all of the feedback. I got half a dozen 500 Axis traditionals in the mail. Going to start over and see what I can come up with. I screwed around with the only Axis 500 shaft I had by cutting it as short as I could for my draw length, used a standard aluminum HIT insert with a 200gn FP and fletched it up. She weighed 521gn and flew pretty good. Still hits a bit right, but less than my last setup. Also hitting a bit low...

Thanks again, I post an update once I get the new  shafts flyin!
