Will I get away with .300 spine?
« on: March 01, 2017, 01:16:00 AM »
So I am waiting for a Dryad Orion ACS in 60" which I bought on Black Friday. It is supposed to be finished any day and I am planning new arrows.

The issue is that our fallow deer rut is around the corner and I was hoping to blood my new bow. I got a 28.5" draw and ordered #65 limbs (got told that they likely will be lighter) Assuming they end up at #63 could I get away with .300 spine arrows shooting a 250 grain head? I got plenty of broadheads I want to use.

If I need to go .250 spine the options are slim and I would be limited to black carbon. (Would prefer pretty wood grain or lacquered arrows).

Anyone shoot a heavy Dryad Orion ACS RC? I currently shoot a #54 version with 350 grain up front.

Minimum weight I want to shoot is really 10GPP.

Andreas I can't help you directly, but I have ordered a 72# caribow and have done some similar research. If you go by the spine calculators they suggest a .200 spine shaft for my setup, to end up with 10gr/lb and about 350gr up front. However a lot of guys on this forum shooting bows in that weight range thought I was nuts going that stiff, they are using 300-350's,with up to 450gr up front.

So I would suggest it is well worth a try going with the 300 shafts. Black Eagle make some awesome options.

Let us know what worked out for you.

I think you should be okay with 300,Saying that I think there are more  intellectual persons on here that hopefully chime in.

I shot a similar set up with Easton Axis shafts for many years. The 300's should be fine but fine tuning may require playing with different weight heads. Going with a 300 spine with any bow over 60# is where I would start.

My RER, with similar weight specs uses .300s set up as you describe.  A good hunting arrow set up in my mind at least.

Thanks a lot. I was worried ordering a bunch of shafts before but it seems like I will be fine. If I stick with GoldTip I can use the Fact weights as needed.

Can't wait to get bow in hand. It will be Marble wood and Bocote riser with Bocote limbsations from onestringer. (If the limbsations looks good and match the riser)

A 300spine shaft long 31" isn't the same beast as a 29"long one, everything depends on what lenght you want it.

Seems like a big jump from .340 to .300.
300's are pretty stiff you won't need stiffer.
My bow is 1/8 past center 63@31. I use.300 trad only with 50 gr insert and 250 gr point.
Note - not all .300 are the same stiffness. Black eagle .300s are too stiff for me.

I'm shooting a 55# Black Widow and I ended up going with 300 Gold Tips to get perfect bare shaft tuning....I'm shooting 250 grains up front on a 29 inch shaft.

I'm shooting a 60lb curve of my own make with a shelf 1/8 past center. I'm shooting .300 gold tips with 100gr inserts and 125gr heads, cut 30.5" and hey fly perfect. If I had done what a lot of people say on here Ida been shootn noodles. I tried .340's and.400's before and they flew sideways literally even with low point weight. The only way I could get the flight I wanted and the weight up front was stiffer

I use 340s full length with 300 gr up front for a paltry 47-48# draw.  It's a little stiff but bareshafts are still hitting with fletched out to 25 yards if my release is good.  300s with 63-65# of force behind it could probably be tinkered with to tune well.  There's only one way to find out for sure...

Very exciting news, my new Dryad Orion ACS RC is basically done. I got the preliminary draw weight at #68 @ 28". They will attempt to lower it slightly but I will probably end up around #66

I am ordering some new shafts and need to make a choice. My options would be either Goldtip Trad 75/95, Easton Axis 260 spine or Australian brand Widowmakers (13.3 GPI) 250 spine.

Aim is to reach around 10 GPP

I shoot
GT 300's  31" with 250 point reg insert 650 gr.  out of my Black Wolf Recurve 50@28. Pulled to 29.5

And out of my 2 pic ACS longbow 51@28 pulled to 29.5

also shoot the same arrow with brass 100 gr inserts 740 gr total out of my Chek- Mate recurve 55@28 also pulled to 29.5

I bare shaft test on a regular basis and all shoot laser straight.

I'd go with the stiffer spine on the new ones.  that  way you can keep  your point weight up where you want it.

I'm shooting the same bow at 51 @ 30.5 with GT trads 75/95 and 200 up front.  They test slightly weak.
