First of the season ...
« on: October 31, 2007, 11:22:00 AM »
6pm last night I heard "crunch, crunch, crunch" off to my left.  I had been seeing squirrels earlier so I didn't pay it much mind until it got much louder.  It's getting closer and closer but I still can't see what's making the noise ...  Finally, a small buck steps out about 20 yards away.  He's broadside, I draw and release.  I hit him a little further back than planned, but he just jumps back a bit and walks away.  He stops, stands and then walks further off.

I take a compass bearing and stay in my stand and listen to see if I can hear him fall or get a better idea of where he's going.

About that time a BIG buck decides to show-up as well.  He's  coming from my right rear and getting closer.  He's standing about 8 yards behind me and  my brain freezes while I'm trying to figure out how to turn for a shot.  While I'm fumbling around, he sees me (or hears me), snorts and runs off a little ways.  He mills around for a while and finally walks off.

I stay in the stand till dark, get down and find my arrow.  Blood and stomach matter.  So I back out and come back this morning.

I get to my arrow, look the way he was walking ... and there he is 33 yards away.  He must have gone down right as I lost sight of him and it was too dark to see him when I got off the stand last night.

Anyway, I take back all the bad things I've said about snuffers.  Horne Brush Bow 53@29, 160 Snuffer, arrow 546gr.  20 yard shot, deer made it 33 yards before going down.

“instinctive archery” is more like playing the violin. Without practice you may remember the mechanics, but you will not be a virtuoso.

Great job. Sometimes the most important thing to do is the most difficult. Resisting the urge to follow too soon.
