Total Archery Challenge, TRAD friendly?
« on: May 02, 2017, 11:21:00 AM »
Hey guys. For those of you that may have attended this "fun shoot" or have better knowledge of it than I do is this a trad friendly shoot? FerretWyo and I are considering meeting up at the one in South Dakota with our better halves. I know we'd be welcome. But I read in the FAQs that many of the shots are at very long distances up to 100 yds.  I gotta admit. I don't usually shoot past 30 yards. Much less 40+ and I don't want to go and be miserable cause I've missed MOST targets. Not to mention the girls and their frustration.
Anyway I think you get where I'm going with this..
Any thoughts from those with experience?

I did it last year and was the only trad guys that I saw there. All of the compound guys were laughing at my longbow since I couldn't hit the 80 yard targets. The people running it encourage you to shoot from wherever you feel comfortable though, so you can walk up close to shoot if you want. There are lots of different courses that are different ranges. I shot one of the medium courses, which had shots from 80-30 yards and missed almost everyone. I then shot the easiest course which was (I think) 20-60 yards. Its fun, but if you plan on shooting from the stakes, just don't expect to make a lot of hits. I recommend you try it because it's fun, just don't take it to seriously.

I went to the big sky event last year and will be going again this year. There were a handful of trad guys and it was a blast. Yeah I walked up on 90% of the targets but also being able to shoot some long bombs at the moose and buffalo targets was pretty great  :)

So yes I've read in the FAQs that it's allowed to walk up to any distance. But was also wondering if people were patient with that. Or it was seemed as an annoyance?
Anyone else??

Pay your money and use the rules to suit your style.... it takes us 1 minute to acquire a target, do your mental thing, draw and loose. They can take up to5.  Do not sweat it,shoot have fun and learn the lessons you can

In our case it was me and my brother, he was shooting a compound and I my recurve. The groups in front of us and behind us were 5+ people so we were the ones who had to be patient  :)  we were actually shooting multiple arrows on each target. More than anything I had people asking me how the heck do I shoot without sights, not one single negative interaction. It seemed like everyone there was there to have fun.

Not sure if they're all the same or not, the one in San Antonio has a Trad course. Shots range from 18-25 yds. From what I understand, everyone is invited to shoot the other courses, just shoot from where you feel comfortable shooting from.

No, it's not an annoyance. Depending on the course you'll be waiting for the group in front anyways. Just be prepared for a bit of ribbing from the compound guys. A lot came up to me and complimented me on challenging myself with a longbow saying that it was really cool, and a lot told me I was wasting my time. Just shake it off and keep shooting. It's a fun event if for nothing else you get to take some long shots and watch your arrows go.

I shot the Boyne event last year but with my compound.  My daughter shot the youth course with her longbow.

This year we're going to Compton's instead.  It's the same weekend  and same distance of drive for us.
