Bows Storage on X-Country Move..Help!?
« on: May 07, 2017, 07:47:00 AM »
Gang,

I will be moving across the country this June and would like your thoughts on moving my bows. I was planning on letting the moving company move my bows after I securely pad and pack them in boxes myself. My question is...do you think my takedown recurves run the risk of delamination sitting in a storage crate on a moving truck as it travels to California?

I have moved across the country three times now and usually pack all of my bows with me, but this is becoming a hassle.

Interested in your thoughts, thanks!

I also am expecting a cross country move this summer at some point.  I packed up most of my bows and shipped them.  They are all Waiting for me except the couple that I use on a regular basis.
Relax,

You'll live longer!

Can't see much difference between the moving company and a trucking company moving new equipment to a retail store.

My concern is when the bows, as packed away as they are, sit in a storage container or hot moving truck until the company can deliver the shipment. It will likely sit in some type of storage environment for about a month.

I am guessing that if they are not strung ( under any tension) the heat should not be a huge issue.

That could be an issue. Ask were the lot is. There are a couple of trucking hubs in CA. and they are in the desert. Barstow is one and Bakersfield is another. That would concern me. By June it will be 100 degrees with ground temps around 140 especially sitting in a parking lot. Are you driving out or having car shipped as well? If driving I would take them with me.

We moved from Cherry Point to Monterey CA last summer, and next month to Quantico. All of our bows, guns, and valuables will travel with us. This time we are doing a DITY move because of how unsatisfied we were from how our stuff was packed in NC. The movers were great, packers were not. Our stuff was transported door to door, no waiting for delivery. Good luck.

That would concern me as well. Not trying to cause you to panic. If shipping from point A to point B via USPS, UPS or FEDEX it will be on the move, not sitting in a truck. Moving cross country a different story, sometimes your stuff is on a truck with several other family's stuff. Is there any place close to your final destination that you can ship them to? Maybe you can call a UPS store near your final destination and ship to them and pick them up when you arrive? I haven't had the best of luck with moving companies, but Murphy hates me. Hope it all goes smoothly.
Life can be complicated. Hunting shouldn't be.

Thanks guys, I think I'll just continue to move them with me. Sounds like the safest idea. Thanks for the feedback!

Made that DC to CA move and back several times.  My weapons do not leave my possession.  Door to door might not be so risky, but we had two cars so we split the load.  That said all ancillary gear got packed and moved- arrows, targets, ammo reloading gear, etc

I used to work for a moving company and if I were you I would pack it myself and take it in your vechicle. Ive seen some pretty good packers in my time, but Ive seen some really bad ones too, but most of the help is just summertime so they are less experienced.

Also it might go to storage, so it will be handled at least two more times. Plus the trailers get really hot in the summer months, well over a 100 degrees. Simply put, take with u and have one less thing to worry about. My family has well over a 100 years experience in the moving business. Brad

Sounds like you have your answer and decision, but just for the fun of it, or to reinforce it... on my move to Hawaii, we thought we had done pretty good watching everything get packed, boxed and crated.  (To include the one packer trying to pack their own pockets in the items locked inside a separate room that nobody was suppose to enter.)

When they were uncrating everything in Hawaii, the mover called me up to look at how they had nailed my bow into the crate. That seriously made me nauscious, the recurve my father passed down to me from his father.  The had caught the limb in the edge of the crate, twisted and cracked it.
Still have the bow hanging in my garage. More of a longbow guy now, but keep thinking I would have a takedown riser built out of it, if that is even possible.

... so yes, if you care about it, move it yourself. That move was in 2004, since then I have moved everything myself.... up down left and right across this country.
Shootz!
