Dad wanted me to hunt a place with him yesterday evening after i got out of clinicals, so of course i obliged. He just got permission to this place a couple weeks ago. Its only about 65 acres but it has some nice cover on it. I intended to just go and video him, but he wanted me to go ahead and hunt. Didn't bother me, lol. I just took my climber a little deeper into the property until i found a spot i liked.
I didn't expect to anything until pretty close to dark, so it suprised me when i saw two deer 50 yards and closing at about 6 o'clock. I was thinkin, crap they are headed straight for me and there is zero cover between us and im sitting down. The came straight down the trail and stopped at about 30 yds. Its a young doe and a young spike. The doe wants to veer off the trail away from me, but the spike acts like hes gonna come right at me. I manage to stand very slowly on shakey legs, only to realize my view is obscured by some leaves. So crap, now i gotta sit back down without being seen. I get back seated and the spike is 20 yds broadside. But he sure acted like he'd come closer. And sure enough he started a steady walk right for me. When he got to 5 yds (kind of at my 10 o'clock) i started trying to draw. My system was all screwed up cause i was trying to draw so slow to avoid detection. That 58 lbs. felt like a hundred, lol. All i can see is those big black eyes that know something just isnt right. I never even reached anchor, shaking like a leaf, and never picked a spot. I pretty much just fell apart. He knew something was up so i released. Arrow went right over his back. How do you miss a five yard shot i think to myself. I dunno if i hit a limb or maybe the deer bumped the arrow in flight but my arrow stuck in the ground at a severe sideways angle. It all happened too fast to be able to tell.
So yeah i was disappointed, but i learned a lot and i know everything i did wrong.
Main problem, i didn't select a tree that i could get high enough in to feel confident of drawing without detection. I didn't pick a spot. He was so close, that i just looked at his whole chest cavity. (rookie mistake lol) I allowed myself to release an arrow even though i knew i wasn't anchored. I just wanted it SO bad! Im sure yall know what i mean. Ill chalk it up as a learning experience and try again next time.
I love it
