Which digital camera?
« on: November 03, 2007, 11:03:00 AM »
What digital camera do you use/want for taking pictures of game? What power zoom works good and in low light? I was watching a real nice bobcat yesterday from about 100 yards and would loved to have gotten some pictures. From my cheap camera, you can't even begin to see him in the photo.  I'd like to stick with digital. Mike

Anything in the range of the Nikon D50 should work really well for you. The Canon Rebel XTi is a sweet setup.
I have a 75-300mm zoom and a 2x teleconverter that seems to work pretty well for me, but at 100yds I would want even more glass than that--1000mm with or without a teleconverter would be fine. Just remember that you lose a stop or two of light with a converter.

I have the canon powershot s3, they now have the s5. Is great, don't have any lenses yet but out to 40 yards or so it does well. As mentioned before, you would need a lot of glass for 100 yards. A little too bulky for me when I am hunting. Good luck, photography is addicting. Here is a pic of a bull moose at about 25-30 yards.

I like my Fuji S700 about $220 at WMart. 10x optical 7 meg uses 4 AA and I use the rechargables. Half way between a small pocket camera and a SLR type digital.

I've got a Nikon D70s with an 80-400mm zoom.  Takes great shots but I find it bulky for packing in with all the other gear.

Instead of me recommending a camera, i am going to recommend going to walmart, radio shack, best buy and asking someone for their advice. My brother works for best buy and he tells me all the time that its easier to help people when they tell you what they will be using the " device" ( in his case computers) for.

Think of this as you would if you were buying a bow, research it and list the top 5 most important features. Then narrow your choice down until you have 1 camera. Is size important? there are cameras as small as a deck of cards! or is Zoom more important as that will increase the size of the camera no-doubt.

Give it some thought and let us know what you decide.

I just bought a Olympus SP-550UZ. It has an 18X optical zoom and can be used fully auto or manual. The digital zoom goes to 100X. Haven't used it much yet as I am still learning, but I think it will be pretty nice. Hap
