High wrist on low grip
« on: June 29, 2017, 12:10:00 AM »
After spending a few hours catching up on The Push Archery podcast I am on target to improve my technique and have been thinking of my grip. I have always though I shot a rather high wrist. However I found that I prefer a thinner and lower grip. Can you shoot a low grip with high wrist? Also, what are the pros and cons of not following the grip. I.e. High wrist on low grip?

I added a photo of one of my risers and a  video of me shooting. Am I right by saying this is a low to medium grip with a high wrist style shooting?

I would think it would be hard to be consistentwith a high qrist on a low grip because your palm would be " floating"

See how the bow rolls forward at release in the first two videos?  That tells me that you have all the hand pressure on the pivot point (deepest part) of the bow grip.  The actual PRESSURE point is below the PIVOT point. FWIW

Can't really tell anything from the 3rd video except it looks like you are shooting pretty well.

"Can you shoot a low grip with a high wrist?" Of course you can, see your own videos.     :D    :D

That said, coaches would really suggest a better bow hand technique.

A low grip is to give you more control and connection with the riser.  It puts the pressure point more on the pad of your hand below your thumb or along the life line.  It puts the pressure more in line with your arm bones and takes pressure off your wrist.  I Love a low grip, great choice for me.  Shooting a high grip on a low grip riser would seem to put more pressure on the wrist and give you less balance and control?  Maybe a medium grip would be most comfortable for you??

Yes, my pressure point is rather small and I guess it transferred from shooting a compound that way off the riser. I have shot a Border Black Douglas with a higher grip and didn't like the feel as it felt like my hand was "stuck" into the grip. I shot a couple of Dryad Risers too and they normally feel really good but I am questioning my technique as I am keen to improve my shooting.

I don't know about right or wrong ( I'll defer to Arne on that one), but that is pretty much how I do it, and I am a longbow shooter primarily. To me, there really is no right or wrong. There is only consistent and inconsistent. If you can do it a certain way, and be consistent, you will be good. I had a very high level coach tell me I should change my grip several years ago, but it just didn't work for me. If your everyday shooting is as good as the two shots in the last video, I wouldn't change a thing!

And for what it's worth, you should always be trying to get better. The day you think you are good enough is the day you stop getting better!

Here is a few photos taken over the last year of my grip (when not thinking about the grip). Some look a bit different but you get the point.

That looks better than what I THINK I saw in the videos.  Go with it.

Was going to agree with Arnie without looking at the videos.  Still didn't look at the videos, and still agree with Arnie after looking at the stills.

I'd call the grip on your bow a medium grip.  The first two pictures, you seem to be filling the grip, i.e., not really shooting it high wrist, but the last two pictures look closer to a high wrist hold.

Regardless, as Arnie said initially, you can shoot any riser high wrist.(The opposite is not true, i.e., can't shoot low wrist on a high wrist riser.) You seem quite comfortable with your grip on the bow you're shooting.  I agree.  Go with it.

A high wrist puts the pressure in the web of your hand.  push on that spot with your other thumb and see how it can move around.

Now press on the ball of your palm and see how much more solid and firm it feels.

Now some very great archers have and do use the high wrist hold.  But for consistancy sake I think a low wrist is more stable and repeatable.
