First Kansas Hunt
« on: November 03, 2007, 06:03:00 PM »
Yesterday was my first hunt in Kansas since moving here last December. I set up under an osage tree made a nice ground blind. Not to much action for the several hours even though Iwas grunting, rattling and using the doe in estrus can call. About 45 minutes before dark a doe came running past me at about 75 yards. For several minutes I considered moving into the area that the doe ran through just in case a big was in pursuit, big mistake! I had only gotten 25 - 30 feet from my ground blind when I caught movement out of the corner my eye to my right. I was a small six pointer moving along a trail that would take him to within 10 yds of my blind. Then I saw movement on the trail that the six poniter had come down. At first, I thought it was a doe, but then I heard grunting. Once the deer came into the open I realized it was the largest bodied deer and largest rack I ahd ever seen on on live deer. Everything was going good and I was setting up for a shot, when the six poniter busted me. He snorted and ran about 30 feet, but the big buck did not seem concerned, so I waited. The six pointer still  did not like the situation and ran off with the buck of a lifetime trailing behind. I was a sad puppy. At least I had proven other hunters wrong that told me no big bucks were on public land within 20 minutes of Olath, Ks. I hope I will be in the woods waiting on him Sunday afternoon.

I'm with you on that. I stayed out of the area last night, but I am heading out tonight. I will be settingup in the same area and I will stay in the blind.

Ricky,
I went out for the first time this year yesterday evening and again tonight.  Went over to Hillsdale.  Is that where you have been going?  Not asking to try and find out where you saw the big buck, but thinking maybe we could go out to Hillsdale and hunt together sometime.  Also, if you ever get one and need help dragging him out, call me.  You got my number.  By the way, a neighbor of mine told me where he saw a real nice buck out there also.

Yes, I was out at Hillsdale. I am suprise that I have not seen anyone else hunting out there. I went out yesterday evening and the monster came in again. I missed twice due to hitting small limbs. I will give him a few days to cool down and head back out again. Hopefully, I will need some help next time. He is bedding down on a ridge and moving into the bottom that I am hunting. I sure wish I had some extra vacation so I could have a better chance at getting him.

I have only been out there twice, but I did not see other bowhunters either.  Heard plenty of shotguns both times though!  I guess duck hunters.  Wish I could get out there tomorrow, since the high is only supposed to be 48 degrees.

I may take my camper out there one of the next two weekends.  Probably will make it a 3 or 4 day weekend.  Call me if you have any interest in joining me!  Right now it is me, myself, and I.

Also have a place I have hunted the last two years about an hour south of us.  It is awesome, but I am waiting to hear from the owner (father of a friend) to make sure I can still go out there this year.  If I can, you would be welcome there too.

Hopefully I will be head back out tomorrow night to try once more. I will be adding a little more difficulty this time, My 9 year old daughter will be going with me. This will be interesting, she loves to hunt, but she does not sit still.
