Great Lakes Longbow 2017
« on: August 13, 2017, 05:12:00 PM »
I just got home from the GLLI and I must say I was blown away by the attendance this year. I have never seen so many camps at this event even more that the early days at Marshal.

I went to ETAR in Pa earlier this year, it has the reputation as the biggest traditional shoot in the Country but the GLLI which is a longbow shoot looked every bit as well attended.

It was heart warming to see so many young people toting bows and back quivers. It seems most young people today have their nose stuck in their phones. After this weekend it looks like there's hope for the future of traditional archery.

If you were there, what did you think...if you took pictures, post em.

Sounds like a great time. I have never been to any large trad event. I hope to make a few in the coming years.

And yes, please post pics.  :)

I had a BLAST. Camped with some great people shared a campfire and some beverages. Didn't take any pictures. I think I saw you cruise by our camp on your Harley Ron.

I did ETAR and GLLI last year, and neither this year. The crowds we're much larger at ETAR, but I liked GLLI way better, and would go back. It was spacious, and uncrowded, ETAR was the opposite. I don't want to camp with tent lines crossing.

Kind of like watching one of your children grow up an mature, hey Ron?

GLLI is a great mix of everything.  Lower key than the other shoots (just enough vendors to get supplies and high quality gear), nice shooting course. Great novelty shoots and competitions. Outstanding camping.  MLA has a great location and this should be a solid shoot for years to come.

Had a GREAT time!!  Arrived Saturday about 10am and didn't leave until after 4pm.  Spoke with many awesome bowyers and shot too many bows.  Chuck from Two Tracks, Greg from Javaman, David and Tracey from St. Joe River bows, and the guys at the 3Rivers booth.  I had an incredibly hard time walking away without a new bow purchase as so many shot very well!!  Seemed very well attended to me.

We enjoy ETAR every year but have never been to GLLI. It would be great to have some photos and info on it.

Ron, it was good to see you at Denton Hill, and  thanks for signing the cap. Now the cap, with your signature, and other significant archery contributors is hanging in the shop for future archers to see.

Hi Don, it was good seeing you guys again at ETAR, however briefly.

Here's a link to the GLLI event on the MLA website.

I was on a road trip to the north of the state all last week on my Harley. I left Charlevoix at 11:00am on Saturday and road 210 miles to make the shoot before things closed up.

The wind in your hair keeps you awake.     :jumper:

A couple of my friends Greg Coffey and Chuck Deshler, former Shrew bow makers were there to greet me when I arrived.

My bike is a 1997 Heritage Springer. It's a cruiser not a Dresser, a dresser is more comfortable on a long trip.

Riding the Springer, you're hanging on and you feel every crack in the road. The wind whistling past your ears and the roar of the fishtail straight pipes makes an old man feel alive. It also eliminates any danger of falling asleep.    ;)

A well kept secret is the good fishing in the Thornapple river that runs close by. Just ask Floyd Wells.    :saywhat:

I mentioned to my wife that I noticed the kids weren't all stumbling around with their face stuck to a phone, that's so refreshing to see.
