Elk hunting in NM?
« on: August 19, 2017, 05:50:00 PM »
So my dad ran into a friend who knows a guy with private land elk tags he can't use this year in chacon/holman county in New Mexico, but no one I know has hunted that area. Anyone have any Intel or knowledge of the area? Any info would be appreciated!

I live in NM and have never heard of either county.  My guess is you would be better off passing on this "opportunity".

I believe it is in GMU 53 in Mora county close to Taos. I killed a bull in 53 in 2013 on public land. If I remember right it's not nearly as rugged and steep as the northern portion where I hunted. I would be all over it if it were me!

After a 30 sec goggle search it appears that the area you reference is actually Mora County.  Check out the NM dept of wildlife web site for info.

Thank you for the info! I was going to give them a call. I was mostly wondering about terrain. My dad can't do super rough terrain. It was between this area and hunting around Durango CO

If you don't wan't rough terrain, best go south. While there is massive amounts of public land in this area, the access is poor when compared to other areas.  Everyone is funneled through a limited number of access points and hard work is a prerequisite if you want to see elk, seeing as this is an over the counter tag area and there are plenty of hunters.

South in New Mexico or Colorado? Hard work isn't really the problem, it's more the hard steep climbs that I'm trying to avoid. He can navigate hills, but almost vertical climbs he's not able to do a lot of

I've hunted elk in New Mexico twice so far and the terrain to me is not that difficult as compared to the mountains of Wyoming. You have to keep in mind to trek at a pace that is conducive to your ability and stamina.

Keeper; I live in the four corners area aka Durango and have hunted this region for several years.  I can't speak to  New Mexico elk hunting.  Good luck in your decision.
