Onxhunt maps are a great resource for gps units.  Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and US Forest Service are good sources for paper maps for use with compass.

I use USFS maps.  I'll also use screen shots from Google Earth/ maps when I head to spots with little to no cell service.

Backcountry Navigator for Android or Gaia maps for iPhone.  NO CELL SERVICE REQUIRED!

Topo or aerial maps in your pocket for the price of just a few USGS topo maps.

Try caltopo.com. The free version lets you make 8.5x11 sized PDFs which you can then print. If you pay for the service, you can print bigger. I forget the prices.
