Have you ever heard a whitetail buck hiss?
« on: November 01, 2017, 03:16:00 PM »
I wear two hearing aids due to occupational hearing loss. Last evening I had two does move in behind me, unfortunately downwind due to thermals shifting. As soon as they got directly behind (and below) me, they went on "high alert". About that time I heard a grunt and seen a mature buck dogging them from behind. For several minutes the three deer walked back and forth, attempting to find me (the threatening odor source).

At one point another doe, began to cautiously approach the other 3 deer from my right and above the other deer that were still behind me. The buck stood stoically and stared in the direction of the yet unseen to him doe. She also seemed locked on his position. As soon as she stepped to the edge of the flat, and into his view, he made a sound I have never heard in 50 years of hunting deer.

I've heard the grunt wheeze and have heard a couple mature (read old) bucks growl, but never heard this before. It was a short, high pitched "hiss". A bit like a "blow" or "snort" (as we call it here), but higher pitched and shorter in duration.

When he made the sound the doe froze in her tracks. She remained motionless until he dropped into a ravine where he obviously got a snootfull of me. He then snorted, or blew, and corralled his two does and was out of there.

Just curious if anyone else has experienced this.

I have heard them do a very sharp and high nose wheeze.  Almost a whistle.

I have not, but I heard a doe vocalize two evenings ago.  Not quite grunting, but at first that is what I thought it was.  Weird...

Yes. I spooked a 4 pointer who saw me draw from a ground blind. He took off like a scalded dog, then after reaching what he considered a safe distance went ti hissing like an angry cat. I'll never forget it.

No, although I've heard mature bucks tending hot does within a few steps, but oblivious to me make a sound that seemed like a low-toned rapid succession of clicks... "tickatickatickaticka" as fast as you can possibly roll it off the tip of your tongue... but from them it sounded more throaty or guteral... and almost under their breath... like some orgasmic, convulsive exhale. I doubt if I were 15-20 yards away I could have heard them.

I too have heard one click.  He sounded like the WWII Normandy invasion clicker.  He was following a doe and made a rub about 30seconds before I shot him.  I heard the clicks first and thought another hunter was just making noise.

I have heard a buck growl a couple of times, or maybe it was a sasquatch, but I suspect it was a buck. Very angry, very guttural not the least bit  like the commercial call that is supposed to be the same thing. This sounded more like a lion's roar.

As strange as it sounds I did encounter what could only have been a sasquatch one time. It was in a cane thicket on the side of a mountain, I couldn't see it but it was very angry at my presence. It's high pitched wailing roar was like a frenzied angry banshee, then came the rocks and limbs being thrown in my direction.

When one log as big as my leg came flying out of the thicket and almost made the 30 yards to me I looked at my bear Kodiak Hunter bow and razor head tipped arrow, I thought "no way" and off I ran as fast as my skinny little legs would take me.

That's a good description of what I heard. My son asked if the "doe" could have been a button buck. His thought was that since the mature buck was dogging the does, the "hiss" might have been a warning to stay away. I don't know, but I know I heard it. He even tensed up when he hissed.

The rapid fire "clicking" I've also heard, but only when the bucks were actually "doing the deed", and were very close. Only heard the growl twice that I remember, both old bucks dogging does.

As for Sasquatch... well, never mind.   :saywhat:

Did the hair bristle on his back?  I've seen it up close when a nice buck was dogging a doe,  a lesser buck was tagging about 10-15 yds behind,  the big buck suddenly whirled around and with his ears back and hair bristled on his back gave the smaller buck the nastiest loud hiss you ever heard - it was cool.

That must have been it. I didn't see his hair raise,  but he definitely jerked!
