"Work Sharp" power sharpener for broadheads?
« on: November 18, 2017, 06:04:00 PM »
Anyone ever try this
 http://www.lancasterarchery.com/work-sharp-original-knife-and-tool-sharpener.html
on traditional 2-blade broadheads? Experiences?
Arthritis is killing me and looking for a powered sharpening option.
Thanks.

Kevin,
I just got one "The Ken Onion " and 2 blades can be sharpened but I had to do it without the angle guide. I'm learning also cause I just got mine in October !

I have the original and like Keefer I too remove the guides. Rotate the head into the grinding position then just go slow and watch your angle .
Can use the purple belt to buff or you can strop it.
Mount it securely somewhere and lock the trigger on. Then you can use both hands.
Good luck

Have you tried the RADA sharpener?  A much cheaper option.  My wife gets her Zwickys razor sharp with ours and then a light dusting with a diamond hone.

I have thought of buying the RADA but haven't because I already use several pull through sharpeners. With my multiple setups and (just like you) more than 1 bowhunter in the house my thumb arthritis is hampering my ability of the repetitive motion.

I was thinking it had to be done without a guide for most broadheads because of the ferule getting in the way.

Looks like it might be worth the $70.

lots of the power sharpeners work great on heads like Deadheads, but not on narrow broadheads.  I do not know what models the the local meat market uses.  One grinds and the other buffs.  But I can say it took very little time for them to do six Deadheads for me a few years back.  They did my steak knives for me and my wife was afraid to mix them with the other dishes.  The power one we had was the reason that I went to Deadheads and Deltas a number of years back.   The thing did not work for Hills.  Just knives and wide broadheads. I got mine from Cabelas.

Taking a closer look at the Work Sharp ones, I would think with the different belt option, they would work on heads like Deltas and Bears.

I use a broadhead arrow holder.  For me, The middle  thumb joint gives me trouble at times. Years of loading large printing presses with enameled paper, required lots of hand strength.  My middle and end thumb joints are bad, not as bad as locked up, but still painful at times. The arrow holder allows me to palm the whole affair and take the use of the thumb out of the game of keeping the arrow stable.  I use it mostly when I file sharpen, but by extending the head out it still stabilizes things with just four fingers and the palm.  I think it would also help when using the Ken Onion model without the blade guides in place.

Been sharpening for almost 50yrs. Whetstones and diamond stone mainly. Got an original Worksharp on a trade. Best set-up I've ever used. I don't use the guides either. Like any sharpening system, you just keep the angle the same all the time. Quick and easy. Gives you an excellent edge. Works on scissors, with the guides, knives or any size broadhead. Very good investment.

I love the workshop for sharpening knives, but have never had success with broadheads for some reason.

I ordered one, tried it on my broadhead, was not happy with the results, and sent it back!

Worksharp is a great tool if you take the time to learn to use it.  Very versatile like some have mentioned.  Mine really makes butchering a pleasure!  If i were buying one tool just for broadheads though it would be the kme broadhead sharpener.

As others have said, if it’s going to be a dedicated BH sharpener then get something else. But if it’s going to do the majority of your sharpening duties then by all means use it! I’ve used mine on everything from kitchen knives to my Cold Steel Riflemans Hawk & from my pocket knives to my Grizzly Maasai BH.
