Toddster gave you a good answer.  Dull muted shades work just as well as "store bought" camo for most 4 legged critters.  Birds, not so much.

I've worn just the Asbell wool and with First Lite ASAT vest over the wool for 10 yards and less bow kills. I feel it is important to break up your outline with a camo or plaid as well as have a good background to blend into. Despite Camo, any movement you make that is seen by the animal will trigger them.

Use anything that breaks up your outline, I don't think type or brand of camo is overly important. But good back cover and minimal movement are key. Also camo your hands and face I think is very important. Anything that shines or has a glare it seems animals zero in on it. Try not to move until it's time to draw and do so hopefully when the animal is int looking, and you can get it done on s regular basis.

Wool clothing in dull colors could be just effective.

For birds, yes.  Use camo.  They see color.

For most mammals, no.  Dull, natural colors work fine.  

In all cases, movement & noise will give you away long before your color choices.

I agree that you can be effective either with or without camo. I generally use it, because I have a lot of it that I got when much younger. Since it still fits, I still use it. I also have several pieces of Asbell wool. Muted plaids are just as effective as commercial camo. I have also used solid colored clothes, but I feel they tend to make the human shape show up as a blob. As long as you sit still, you will do fine. Good luck

I may be a little different, but I rarely wear any camo at all. 95% of my hunting is done simply in plain dull clothing.

I don't hunt birds over here, but pretty much all my hunting has been done in jeans and plaid, or in the hot areas, old faded blue cotton business shirts and a pair of khaki shorts. Watching the wind, we have often gotten in real close, like well under 10 yards from pigs and buffalo in these clothes.

I do totally agree with what YosemiteSam said earlier,

I'll add smell in there too. To me, keeping your scent out of his nose is No.1. They won't always run if they see you, but when they smell you, they're always gone.

That said though, a lot of very sucessful hunters wear a good break-up camo, so camo is certainly never the wrong thing.

So I think it boils down to what you think works best for you. Wearing camo or not, both certainly can be very effective. If it gives you more confidence wearing it, go for it. If not, don't bother with it and go hunting anyway.

Adding to that..... a lot depends upon WHERE you are hunting and how pressured the animals are.  Animals that may have never seen a human, at least as a threat, may not care what you wear, while heavily hunted critters may very well spook more easily.  And also, which critters ?   Good eyesight / not good eyesight.

When I want pressured animals to step on me, I wear plaid...... beneath my ghillie suit !

Movement and scent will spook game before colors do. Test the wind regularly and move through the woods slowly and carefully. I often hunt in all grey jogging clothes and have had deer walk right past me.
