Installing Quiver Inserts in your riser...a few ?'s

I have developed an affinity for side-insert quivers.  However, most of my bows do NOT have quiver inserts.  Is there a real science to installing inserts, or is it as simple as drilling the riser and epoxying them in place?  

Are there specific spots on the riser they need to, or should not be?  That's the kind of info I'm looking for.

Not real hard......just stay away from the edge , more in the center and away from limb bolts if it's a T/D. Just go slow and follow the instructions. Look at bows that have them and use that as a guide for yours.

I've probably installed inserts for a Kwikee Kuiver in 15+ bows. If you're looking to install the Kwikee you should be able to get the inserts from either 3Rivers of Kustom King. You want the 10/24 screw inserts for that installation. As ron w says, keep away from the edge and more to the center, and be aware of where the limb bolts are drilled if it's a TD. Also, I always take a quiver, and holding the bow, work it around on the riser to see where it will fit best for my liking. Be very careful not to drill through the sight window. I use a brad point or forstner bit. Some older bows that are not cut to center have more meat there than some of the newer ones that are radiused and cut past center. I also install mine so that they're flush with the riser but that takes 2 different bits and a little more planning.

Agree with what's been said.  Also, I highly recommend using a drill press.  Almost impossible to drill the holes perpendicular to the side of the riser with a hand held drill.

The inserts should be mounted flush or slightly proud of the surrounding wood.  If you mount them below the surrounding wood, overtightning the screws can pull the inserts loose, lifting riser wood along with them.

Too, keep in mind the length of your insert screws.  If they're too long, they will bottom out and pull out the inserts regardless of how they're mounted.

My buddy was a machinist and installed a few for me over the years.  If I remember right here is how he did it.  We used screw in inserts we received from Black Widow....not the press type.

We would locate the best spot, obviously.  Take measurements on exactly how long the holes need to be. Drill the holes on a drill press, ream the edges, thread the holes with a threader, than use two part epoxy and screw in the inserts.  Once the epoxy dried the inserts where solid.  I had a press insert come out on me one time that was installed by a bowyer.....not a big fan of press inserts.

If memory serves, BW inserts are not hollow from end to end, but rather the butt end is solid, preventing a screw from being overtightened and pulling out the insert. And, they have a lip preventing them from being mounted below the surface of the riser.  In short, the insert screws can't pull the inserts out of the riser.  Nice features.

I've also found that using small sand bags to support the bow on the drill press table keeps thing nice and stable while drilling.

I looked on the BW site and couldn't find where they sell riser inserts???  Luckily I do have a drill press.  My concern is the area that I'd really like to install them, the riser has some contour.  Not sure how to do that without having an odd lip on one side of the insert.  Hmmmm...more figuring to do.

That can be a problem.  If you're using a flanged insert, can countersink it ever so slightly, just enough to make the underside of the high side sit flush with the riser. Of course, the top of the low side should still sit proud of the riser wood. Talking 1/32 or less here. If more than that, maybe the riser isn't a good candidate for inserts.  

I have a 2017 BW catalog and notice that the inserts are no longer listed there either.  May need to contact BW directly.

One other thing to keep in mind.  The inside diameter of BW inserts, about 5/32, I think, is smaller than most other inserts I've seen and used. The latter are usually 1/4-inch inside diameter.  So if you want compatibility across different risers, be sure to use the same inserts on all of them.
