*** taking inserts out after testing *** Glue ?
« on: March 09, 2018, 08:48:00 PM »
I have Easton Axis traditional carbon arrows (600).  I want to glue an insert in so I can shoot to test the arrow. What is the best glue so you can take the insert out if you have to.  I thought about hotmelt. But I don't know if the carbon can take it.  I thought of putting a screw into the insert and heating the screw, until it could melt the hotmelt.

But big thing is I don't have a clue if that would work !   :knothead:

Can anyone of you help me with something that you have done or used to test for setting up an arrows.

Thanks

I have used hot melt on the point more than insert. I shoot into a bag instead of foam. Just a little heat on the point should let it loose.

Big Jim’s hot melt. It’s low temp. I made an insert puller out of a broken arrow and mashed point, so I have a handle and threads. Thread it into the insert, heat the shaft of the handle, heat transfers and melts the glue, voila you have your insert out of the arrow.

We use cellophane.  Afterwards when  you want to remove. Drop a drill bit in thru the removed nock orifice. Bounce it a few times and it’s out

Carl-

I bet the hotmelt would work fine. I have never had trouble with the thin super glue. I use a similar set up as described. I screw in a mild steel bolt with the same threading and heat the end with a BBQ lighter. Doesn't take long for a small pop and the insert is loose. I generally do it in the garage, even though I have never noticed any fumes I suppose you ought not sniff it too close.

I have also never noticed any damage to the arrow shafts. Most all my carbons are Gold Tips.

I used plastic wrap you use to wrap a sandwitch by just cutting a small piece and wrapping around the insert if you want to bare shaft and test.
It doesn't take much to hold insert in so don't wrap too much or you could split the end of carbon.
I think this is what RoadKill is referring to?
Once you paper tune or shoot in a soft target so inserts don't pull out then you can glue them in.
It works good especially if you have to fine tune and cut arrows down till tuned.

Or if this is just so you can trim arrows as you tune, glue in the insert as you normally would and then just pull the nock and trim from the nock end.

I use hot melt, never had a problem.  I tried the plastic
Wrap also, but in a new target I had one pull out in it.

Rather than putting a screw in the insert, put a point in that is big enough so any direct heat stays away from the insert and shaft.  A 145 grain or larger point works fine.  Just heat the point a few seconds at a time using a propane torch and give the heat time to move down into the shaft and melt the glue.  Clamp the point in a vise after each application of heat and pull until the insert begins to move.  Don't jerk or overheat or the carbon will begin to unravel.

Are you bare shafting. If so glue in the insert, test and then trim from the rear if necessary. Parallel shafts only.
If not then I place a strip of dental floss or plastic bag over the carbon and press the insert in. Just use it on soft targets. Foam tends to pull out the insert.

I sure do appreciate all the help you guys been given me.  I think, I overthink things, to say the least.

I have a "Pika" from Dan  56"  38#  @  28" but at my draw it's about 41#.   I have purchased Easton Axis traditional carbons (600)
Dan says I should be alright with normal inserts.  But I have purchased 75/50 gr. inserts. I want total arrow wt. to be at least 435gr

A guy gets tired of wasting arrows, so that's why I wanted to take the insert out.  I have found a source here in town for coolmelt. And I have seen the drill bit idea before. But I think the cool melt will come out with normal hot water.

I'm just getting too to old to mess around with stuff, you want it right the first time and right now.   But I got a learn to chill.  But I do have to say the Pika is the best shooting bow I have had.  I just want to get it right with the arrows.

Again, I really appreciate all the help on tradgang, you guy's are great.  After not shooting for about five years because of shoulder problems, I think the the Pika was a really good choice.  The first time I shot it, my groups were 8 inch groups in side a pie plate. Dan said with 600s it will bring it within 4 inches groups for sure.

Welcome back to shooting, can’t imagine not shooting for 5days let alone 5 years. Sounds like you found your “forever” bow as well. Don’t try and do your tuning all at once unless you hit it right away. Getting tired only makes your tuning go south, I been there.
 Good shooting, TomM

Big Jim’s Quik Stick hot melt. Use it for tuning, and for final installation of inserts. You will not have to worry about losing any inserts in targets, and can get any insert you want out with ease!
