Carbon shafts on dacron: what about nocks?
« on: March 10, 2018, 10:47:00 AM »
Dear Tradgangers,

I am trying to bring up and running an old Samick recurve I have at my parents' house. It's a  62#@29" and I am struggling to find some decent aluminum shafts for it. I would like to put the 190gr. Simmons Interceptors on it, but shafts that are stiff enough are also a bit large for the broadheads, creating a ledge that I am afraid is going to have an impact on penetration.
I was thinking to try carbon shafts, so to get something around .340 spine and still matching a 5/16" point diameter. The problem is that I am using a 20 strands dacron string. Carbon shafts all seem to come with nocks suitable for a thinner fastflight string.  Do you know of suitable nocks that would fit a carbon shaft?
Admittedly, 20 strands might be overkill (suggestions are welcome), but even going down a few strands, I don't think the default nocks would fit.

Thank you for any advice,
Max

Not sure if you can find a carbon nock with a wide throat to get a good fit on your fatter string? Some guys sand thier nocks with emery file or heat them in  hot water to spread them out a bit to loosen them up on the string.

You could get away with a skinnier 14 strand B-50 or B-55 string and the right serving size and use the carbons.Around 15$

In aluminum you might find the 2020 size shafts with 5/16th size would solve your problem with the broadhead not matching up with the shaft and creating that ledge.

I would definitely change to a fast flight string, that would help. I also suggest a nock file that Dan Toelke offers. You can find it on his website.

I would change to B-55 string material if your concerned about bow compatible with FF material. B-55 is as strong as B-50 but smaller in diameter. IMO it also added a little performance to my old Bear SK.
Easton makes a ring that fits their skinny shafts that goes behind the broadheads to make a smooth transition from broadheads to shaft. Not sure if they would help but it’s worth a look.
Easton has discontinued the 2020 size aluminum shaft agian. It’s unfortunate but with so many guys going carbon it’s a business decision not an equipment issue.  Carbon would be an answer but my solution for your nock size may not work. I use GT Trads and buy the metal nock inserts then glue on Bohning Trad nocks. I have even glued on the old wide mouthed Mercury nocks I like. I would check with Big Jim or 3Rivers. I believe 3R has a chart that tells you compatibility.
 Good luck, TomM

You could try Easton 3Dsuper nock.  They are about as large as a Bohning glue on index nock.  You can also get glue in nock adapters for most carbon shafts and use any standard glue on nock.  Big Jim, 3 rivers and Kustom King used to have them.  Hopes this helps....

I'd suggest going to B-55 and running 14 to 16 strands. 14 fits about right in most Easton, CX, and Victory nocks and 16 is good for Easton super nocks an Gold Tip nocks

Thank you all for the good advice.

The 2020 are the first shaft I have tried, and the bare shaft with field point on resulted a bit weak. I will go back to the field in a couple of days, I'm going to shoot the fletched arrow with a broadhead on and see if the feathers are enough to make it flight straight. Otherwise I'll check the other options.

Cheers,
Max

14 strands is plenty.  If the bow is "FF" compatible, I'd go with 18-20 strands of BCY-X.

I think you draw 29" Max based on your original post. Not sure how long your 2020s are?But if you mount your broadhead horizontal you could cut them to barely over 29 inches and stiffen the spine a bit if thier currently longer than 29".Or go to lighter head.

I love the 2020 for its diameter, heavy grain weight and thick walls for hunting. When I was shooting 62 #s at 29.5' I was shooting 2020s.Mild reflex/deflex longbow with a dacron string and the bow was cut 1/8th out from center.125 grain head glued onto a swaged aluminum insert.

A 2117 or 2216 are slightly stiffer if those prove to be too weak.I have a feeling they will fly pretty well fletched.
