lemme explain...
yesterday, Field and Stream told me that this was the day to take off from work because oh boy them whitetails is rutting hard! Rattle, grunt, bleat every thirty minutes. Climbed up in my treestand around 1 p.m. in a fantastic location along a rub and scrape trail and followed the F&S advice. Nothing. Saw a little action 150 yards to my south going on around 5:00ish or so. Finally at dark I work my way down the tree and begin gathering my gear to leave. I'm making all sorts of racket crunching leaves etc. when from about 15 yards away I'm startled by a huge snort... I nearly jumped out of my skin. What the heck? They don't come all day long, but when I'm making all sorts of noise they come? Conclusion: grunts and rattles 20 feet up in the tree just aren't that convincing... Sorta like Pat Boone covering Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti" it's pleasant enough and draws your attention, but it doesn't make you wanna dance. Same thing with grunting and rattling from a treestand even to a rut crazed buck... it draws your attention but without the beat of crunching leaves it's nothing you want to dance to. As nearly as I could figure my grunting rattling grabbed the attention of this buck, but it wasn't until I was on the ground stepping on dried leaves that the buck finally closed the distance.
For those of you who have experience hunting from treestands AND from the ground am I right? Would I be better off ground hunting from the spot?
...apologies for the goofy title and to those of you who like Pat Boone's version of Tutti Frutti over Little Richard's (all 3 of you).
