Shooting form video, Need some input on improvement.
« on: February 15, 2007, 08:46:00 PM »
OK, this is taking a lot of courage to do but I want to improve and where else can I get great input but from you guys and gals. Please disregard my nice work apparel. I just got home and thought I would video myself shooting and watch it back.

One thing I notice is, I dip my head twords my right shoulder slightly, release seems a little quick but then again I just got home and I'm all wound up from work.My release hand drops down almost every time, is that ok. I also practice at odd angles like indian crouch, leaning over with the bow severly canted, reverse cant. From my belly laying flat on the ground. I always try and keep my uper body, head, with the bow.

Ive shot my homemade target since last summer and I got to say that the pie plate size hole worn into it makes me pretty proud.

Thanks JB

Everything looks pretty good to me, but there are a couple of things that I see.  On most of your shots you are plucking the string.  Note how your drawing hand moves down after release very quickly.  The only shot you didnt do this, is the last shot on the second video.  I also noted that your arrow are pretty short.  You are drawing them into the riser.  (Dont use a broadhead on them).  All in all if you are hitting where you want to and are happy with your shooting than I wouldnt change a thing.

Looks good to me, but I'm no expert.  If you are consistent and happy with your shooting I would just keep on keepin' on.  I have watched a lot of people shoot and it seems everyone has there own way of doing it.  I think that is one of the things that makes archery cool.

Alignment looks pretty good to me......and your follow though looks good.....comes back and then down.

I'll have another look later.......but I can't find anything really outta whack.

Are you confident in your abilities?...do you feel like there is an area you need to work on? ...Is there anything you don't like about your shot?

Lookin good. Can't find much to critique. Two things I see: X2 mentioned plucking...I can't really tell because your elbow looks like it's traveling straight back...showing good back tension on follow through. Your hand and even forearm does come down very quickly after the shot...almost as if you are reaching for another arrow already. Hard to tell if it's affecting your shot without seeing where your arrows are landing. May not be but it looks like it could.

In the second video it looks like you are settling your head into the draw near the end of the draw. Some guys can shoot with a lot of head movement but as quickly as you reach anchor/realease, I'd think that your head needs to be completely still. I say that cause I shoot very quickly too and know my head/neck must not move to the draw or my accuracy will suffer because my "aiming" is done during the draw, not necessarily at anchor like most folks do. The "stiff neck" seems to help with increased back tension too...at least for me.

But in all, I'd be surprised if you had any serious problems with the form you have on the video...

Id have to say JC's critique is right on....everything he mentioned as all I noticed....

Maybe just keep your head still and try to follow straighter back...overall,it looks good.....

Not pointing with your wrist is what sticks out to me.  The palm of your hand is on the full handle.  This is a carryover of many compound shooters. the area between your thumb and index finger is all that should be touching.  Try folding the rest of your fingers into your palm, pointing and pushing with your thumb and index finger.  This also tend to put your elbow and forearm into perfect alignment with your shoulder, reducing string contact.  Just my 2 cents.  Good luck.

Bowdude, I've tried that hold and just can't get used to it. I feel more comfortable with the lower wrist hold. I'll give it some more work on that hold this shooting season. Your couldn't have hit the nail any more direct eather. I was a compound shooter for many years. That form has carried over somewhat. I'll work on it, thanks again JB.
