Hey there Mr. Green! Starting out with a clicker can be a really good thing. Specially if you are trying to learn without a coach. I struggled with inconsistant draw until I posted a similiar question to this one and 2 fellas (A.S. and McDave) persuaded me to try one.
I don't even hear my clicker anymore and didn't even install one on my newest bow. Believe it or not after a while of using the clicker, your draw will become more of a feel thing. When you draw it will just feel right.
As far as installation. I set mine up without the little ball chain. I use 250# bow fishing line that I found at a garage sale. It works great. I start with an arrow that is marked at my desired draw. With the clicker already attached to the bow at the desired position, I have my wife watch while I draw the bow until the mark on the arrow flushes out with the riser. With the bow held there I have her pull the clicker cord until it clicks and mark the cord where it intersects the bow string, level with the clicker. I let down and do the whole process again to see if I get a similiar result . This is close to where the clicker will finally be set but you'll have to do some fine tuning. Some guys say it's easier to set with the ball chain, but I was warned A.S. that it might scar my limbs on release. Several guys have told me that it hasn't hurt their bow but I'm not taking a chance with my BW. Once I get the clicker set where I want it. I (using a cigarette lighter) gently heat the notted end of the bow fishing line at the clicker. While this takes a little bit of "touch" it will make the connction tougher over time as the thin metal clcker wants to cut the string through prolonged use.
I hope this will be some kind of help. I'm sure a lot of the fellas here have different ways of doing this but this is what works for me.
The clicker really is a miraculous tool if used properly. With it my formed improved overnight. Goodluck! DAVE
