Need help, string keeps hitting my nose!
« on: March 16, 2007, 09:20:00 PM »
I have been shooting my longbow for about a month now. Thanks to doing alot of reading on this site and others I seem to be improving. I am having one problem, my string keeps hitting my nose during the release. My friends just say it is because of my big nose (nice friends). It is to the point that my nose has a big scab on it and when I shoot my nose starts to bleed. Any help will be appreciated, thank you.

How are you shooting, are you shooting 3 fingers under? And where is your anchor,is your anchor high up on your face under your eye? You may need to change your anchor point.

I agree with JRY, might try experimenting with different anchor points.

I use to run into this problem every once in a while in the backyard shooting. It was all in my form, i noticed the shots that it was happening  to me on i was tilting my head too far in to get my eye directly over the arrow when i was canting the bow. i released and OUCH! messed up my shot to.  I only found this would happen when i was fatigued after shooting too much.
i shoot 3 under and anchor my middle finger in the corner of my mouth. To correct it i simply just moved my big nose out of the way, didnt try to get so far over the arrow.
In the end it all comes down to the Indian not the arrows.

Agree with MX.  Sounds like you're leaning your head in to meet your anchor.

I was doing this when shooting my CM Hunter 56, but only with that bow.  I decided that I was turning my face inward slighty trying to get a better view through the small sight window.  The more acute string angle of the 56" OAL at full draw did the rest.  Clipped the left side of my nose bloody.

Never had this problem with my 58"-60" bows.  Did some limb swapping to give the Hunter 56 an OAL of 58", and the problem disappeared immediately.  Much easier to shoot well at the slightly longer length, too...

I had the same thing happen once in a while too. too many times to call it anything but bad form.  I have started using a tab and don't think I have hit my nose using it yet.  Also switched back to split finger with the tab so I'm guessing one or both have helped my nose.

Does the string hit your nose when you are pullinig the string back to anchor? If no. Then you are moving your head after your anchor. Your head should be in the same position from the time you start to pull the bow string until you hit anchor and release. Bring the arrow straight back to anchor. Keep your head in the same position and you should be fine.

I find when I have this problem my stance is to open causing me to lean my head in to get over the arrow.

Clem:
I have a friend who had this problem, his 5'6" and swears he draws a 30" arrow. Problem he's turning his head away from the target, looking out of the corner of his eye. Solution turn your head to the target and pull a little less arrow length.

I think aromakr has it.  I hit my nose with the string every once in a while, and when I do, it's always because my face isn't turned toward the target, but on a tangent away from it, and I'm actually looking across the arrow, rather than over/down it.  Also messes up left/right accuracy a little.
