I think I figured it out.....
« on: March 19, 2007, 12:58:00 PM »
Grip pressure on a longbow has a lot to do with the(accuracy) of the arrow. My accuracy was coming and going and I could never figure out what was happening. My left and right was fine, but I would all of a sudden start to shoot high. I it drove me crazy.... If I put more pressure on the V between my thumb and index finger the arrow would go where I was looking every time. Can someone smarter than me explain this? It my be all in my head - but it works.

Well...it's not all in your head!  You've discovered what your bow does when you heel it.

Basically what happens is you put too much pressure low on the grip which causes the lower limb to bend more than usual.  When you release, the lower limb recovers faster causing the arrow to dive down into the shelf. It will act as if your nock point is too low. High hits are common and you may see some porpoising of the arrow.  Assuming you are not overbowed, and know how to grip the bow, the usual cause of heeling is fatigue.

Interesting Molson! I have recently been toying with my grip placement (high wrist, low wrist, etc.). I have come to a pretty happy place with it all, but on occasion I have an arrow that flies high and over the back of my deer target. I always feel like I am doing everything the same and could never figure out what was breaking down with my shot. I think you may have just answered my question here! Thanks for the insight!
