Rut is in Full Swing in SW Ohio
« on: November 11, 2007, 02:23:00 PM »
I've been out a couple of times this week but have yet to see any bucks chasing does.  This morning while getting ready for church my wife informs me that a nice little buck is standing in the harvested corn field across the road.  I told her there must be a doe around for him to just stand there.  Sure enough, I spot the doe in the looking glasses laying down with her head up about 30 yards from him.  He wasn't moving except to change positions every so often.  I set up the spotting scope to look out the living room window to watch and observe as time permitted between getting ready and helping the kids out.  About an hour and 1/4 later just before we were ready to leave she tells me that the doe just stood up.  We then went to the scope to see what the doe would do.  Well, let's just say she was very receptive.  I've witnessed bucks trail and chase does in the wild but have never witnessed a mating pair before this morning.
Thought I would share.

Very cool! I witnessed the same thing years ago while hunting from a tree stand. That buck made a vocalization that sounded like a door hinge squeaking only deeper.I guess it was a long drawn out grunt and he did it a bunch of times in the course of an hour. I never did see the doe until she finally stood up out the tall grass
