Arrows Fishtailing?
« on: June 07, 2007, 05:13:00 PM »
Hello all I'm new to the boards...only posted a few times.  I have only been shooting trad gear for a few months now and have been doing great but have finally come to comething that I need help on.

Just recently as in today I noticed my arrows fishtailing BIG TIME once they leave my bow.  This has bever happened before and until today my arrow flight was awsome (couldn't hit a damn thing but thats a different story lol)

I was thinking that my arrows were hitting the shelf causing such a severe kick outwards.  I am a righty and shoot verticle.  My arrows spin clockwise and when I shoot the fletchings kick out hard to the left and wobble down to the target.

I shoot an old Bear Tigercat (70's) 43@28 w/ 1816's w/ 125 tip.  This is the first time anything has happened like this.

last sunday I shot at a trad only shootin Long Island NY and several people watching me at the range were RAVING about my arrow flight and how great my arrows shoot out of my bow.  And I had to agree they did fly great until today...today somethign weight is happening.  I thought maybe my arrow/string was hitting my armguards so I took that off but it didn't help they still flew like crap.

So whats going on here?

I would bet its your release. Check your back tension and see if your string hand is coming straight back, or if you are plucking the string. Plucking the string will cause the bow string to move to the right and then quickly back left, causing the arrow to strike the riser and fishtail.

Another thing you might want to check is maybe your string stretched changing your brace hieght causing your nocking point to move.

Well I played aroudn this morning and I think it was my release.  I changed my grip a bit to but I instead of taking such a deep hook I backed it off just a little bit and tried to fix my alignment.  Seems to have helped w/ arrow flight...

Tnx guys!

You were also right to check your grip.  If you hold it too tight, you could be torqueing the bow which you might try to counteract by plucking the string and thereby whacking your sight window pretty hard with your arrows.  The voice of experience talking here!

I HATED it lol...I couldn't hit a damn thing!  But it was also my first trad shoot.  The setup was AMAZING!!!!  I think they did a great job...but man did I shoot HORRIBLE!

I can shoot targets but 3D's I seem to have a problem hitting which I'm working on...gotta pick a spot and hit it!
