Shoots where you look ?
« on: June 29, 2007, 09:28:00 AM »
Ok somone explain this to me,is this a individual thing or are there bows that
shoot better than others or is it simply a
tuning issue for each bow if it's tuned
right it will shoot where you look if tuned properly thanks Ralph

The best way I can explain this is, been shooting alum for 2 or three weeks, they are tuned into the bow well, then one night I decide to shoot my cedar arrows which are also tuned to this bow well, but the cedars shot a different point of aim than the alums. I feel you need to reprogram your mind to the wood. Different diameter shafts I feel cause some of this. Both arrows fly great but I have to decide which one to use and STAY with it.

Yes. I feel some bows timing are better than others. No bow is the same even from the same builder. If you ever find one that feels right, string down the middle sell the rest and pray you never break it. I have one right now that I really like and I don,t care about shooting anything else. Ps, Its not even a real high dollar bow.

The way I hold and anchor I need a bow cut to center or past to shoot where I look.My arrow point is always in line, under, on, or over the target with bows I shoot.I've tried bows not cut to center and I shoot left with them.I could try and change the way I aim but don't want to.

I personally believe some bows just match a persons shooting style better than others. They "shoot where you are looking". When you get one that does it for you, you can just FEEL it.

Bonebuster I feel is correct. I shot my recurves well but when I acquired my longbow it makes me shoot better than I am capable of doing.

There are characteristics that make certain bows fit a persons style/technique of shooting a bow.  Fred Bear filed down the shelf until the arrow was riding right on top of his hand.  Many people who shoot longbows shoot too stiff spine arrow which aggrevates shooting left with an already noncentershot bow.  Having a bow and arrow setup that is grooved in and shoots where you look is a combination of good arrow flight, consitent technique and proper practice.  If you change a variable in the equation, shooting diffrent weight and material of the arrows, you have to adapt to that and it takes some time based on your experience level.  Some people are simply blessed with an ability to shoot with great hand eye coordination.  Keith Bain is someone like that, he has told me that from the first time he shot a longbow, he could just shoot it where he looked.  He does not shoot recurves often, but they are not a problem for him either if you have ever seen him shoot.  The rest of us have to work at it more.  Many people fall into the trap of it is the bows fault, when more than likely an error in form is happening.  Most of your really good barebow shooters get a set up and stick with it.  Consistensy in technique and equipment is how people get to where the bow is shooting where you look.

I am well aware that it aint the bow on days when my focus is there i hit where i'm looking
the bow is just one piece of a much bigger puzzle
in the overall scheme of things i just ordered a longbow i hope the bow hits where i'm looking lol.

I agree that the shoot where you look thing is more the shooter than the bow.  On the other hand, some bows seem to be more "forgiving" than others.  I've owned both extremes.  One bow just made me look good.  It really did seem as though all I had to do was look, draw, and release and the target was nailed.  I never did get the other one tuned to where it would shoot for me.  I'd think that it was just me except that I finally gave it to a friend and he never could get it to shoot either.  There was something fundamentally wrong with that bow.

For me it in the tuning. Match the arrow/bow and they all shoot where you look. That is what tuning does.
Some tune easier, and are more tolerant than others, and some are impossible to tune { tiller  to far out of whack to get anything reasonable.

There is no such thing as a universal arrow, you need to find the right one for each bow.

What Pete said. Most any bow is more accurate than the shooter but match it with the right arrows and it helps us guys look good sometimes! Shawn

If a newly acquired bow shoots where you look right off, well, I think that is just luck. Generally, you have to tune the both the bow and the arrows and find the right tab or glove to make it happen. I try to tune the tackle to my eye, not adjust my eye to the tackle.
